    Interdiffusion measurements of modified poly(arylether sulfone)s using nuclear reaction analysis (1997)

    Notes: The interdiffusion and miscibility behavior of three different types of modified poly(arylether sulfone)s with deuterated poly(arylether sulfone) is studied by depth profiling using the nuclear reaction D(3He, α)p. The diffusion coefficients are found to be in the range of 10-15 and 10-14 cm2/s at 195°C. A random copolymer of poly(arylether sulfone) containing 4,4-bis-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)valeric acid units is only partially miscible with deuterated poly(arylether sulfone) when the comonomer content is 8.8 mol %, whereas blends with comonomer contents of 1.7 and 4.5 mol % are miscible as indicated by complete interdiffusion. The transition from miscibility to immiscibility is caused by repulsive interactions of copolymer segments and can be explained in terms of a mean-field theory of random copolymer blends. Also, poly(arylether sulfone)s grafted with 0.4 wt % maleic anhydride or having pyromellitic anhydride endgroups are miscible with deuterated poly(arylether sulfone)s. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Description: His critically acclaimed debut feature, Hideouts (1986), established screenwriter and director Wolfram Paulus (1957–2020) as an important voice of New Austrian Film. Paulus devoted his career to chronicling his homeland and its inhabitants. Over the course of the 1990s, he transitioned from stylistically ambitious character studies for cinema to TV films with broad public appeal. Drama and comedy were his preferred genres. He also directed children’s films and dwelled on historical topics, mostly from the National Socialist period. Beyond the well-known fictional features, Paulus created experimental and documentary works. Moreover, he was a committed pedagogue and produced many educational films with pupils. This edited collection offers interdisciplinary perspectives on Paulus’ multifaceted oeuvre, which has previously received little scholarly attention. The chapters examine production and reception, motifs and aesthetic strategies, film education and unmade projects. This is complemented by a detailed filmography and interviews with Wolfram Paulus and his colleagues.
    Description: Der Autor und Regisseur Wolfram Paulus (1957–2020) wurde durch sein von der Kritik gelobtes Spielfilmdebüt „Heidenlöcher“ (1986) zu einem wichtigen Vertreter des Neuen Österreichischen Films. Zeit seines Lebens widmete er sich der filmischen Durchdringung seiner Heimat und der Menschen, die diese Heimat ausmachen. Im Lauf der 1990er Jahre verlagerte er seinen Schwerpunkt von stilistisch ambitionierten Charakterstudien für das Kino zum publikumstauglichen Fernsehfilm. Seine bevorzugten Genres waren das Drama und die Komödie. Immer wieder legte Paulus Filme für Kinder und Jugendliche vor und entwickelte historische Stoffe, wobei er sich intensiv mit dem Regime des Nationalsozialismus befasste. Neben den bekannteren abendfüllenden Spielfilmen schuf der Regisseur viele experimentelle und dokumentarische Arbeiten. Zudem engagierte er sich als Filmpädagoge und -vermittler. Aus diesem Interesse ging eine Reihe von Filmbildungsprojekten hervor, die Paulus gemeinsam mit Schülern umsetzte. Der Sammelband bietet interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf das Werk, das von der Wissenschaft bisher kaum beachtet wurde. Neben Produktion und Rezeption untersuchen die Beiträge Motive und ästhetische Strategien, Filmbildung und nicht realisierte Projekte. Weiters enthält der Band Interviews mit Wolfram Paulus und seinen Mitarbeitern sowie eine detaillierte Filmografie.

    Description: Visual traces of iron reduction and oxidation are linked to the redox status of soils and have been used to characterise the quality of agricultural soils.We tested whether this feature could also be used to explain the spatial pattern of the natural vegetation of tidal habitats. If so, an easy assessment of the effect of rising sea level on tidal ecosystems would be possible. Our study was conducted at the salt marshes of the northern lagoon of Venice, which are strongly threatened by erosion and rising sea level and are part of the world heritage 'Venice and its lagoon'. We analysed the abundance of plant species at 255 sampling points along a land-sea gradient. In addition, we surveyed the redox morphology (presence/absence of red iron oxide mottles in the greyish topsoil horizons) of the soils and the presence of disturbances. We used indicator species analysis, correlation trees and multivariate regression trees to analyse relations between soil properties and plant species distribution. Plant species with known sensitivity to anaerobic conditions (e.g. Halimione portulacoides) were identified as indicators for oxic soils (showing iron oxide mottles within a greyish soil matrix). Plant species that tolerate a low redox potential (e.g. Spartina maritima) were identified as indicators for anoxic soils (greyish matrix without oxide mottles). Correlation trees and multivariate regression trees indicate the dominant role of the redox morphology of the soils in plant species distribution. In addition, the distance from the mainland and the presence of disturbances were identified as tree-splitting variables. The small-scale variation of oxygen availability plays a key role for the biodiversity of salt marsh ecosystems. Our results suggest that the redox morphology of salt marsh soils indicates the plant availability of oxygen. Thus, the consideration of this indicator may enable an understanding of the heterogeneity of biological processes in oxygen-limited systems and may be a sensitive and easy-to-use tool to assess human impacts on salt marsh ecosystems.

    Description: Einer Anregung des 11. Arbeitskurses Niederdollendorf folgend, wurde eine Methode der Bearbeitung farbiger Originale kartographischer Landschaftsdarstellung entwickelt und erprobt. Eine erste Bestandsaufnahme hatte einen Bedarf an solchen Darstellungen bestätigt; geeignete Techniken stehen zur Verfügung, es fehlt jedoch eine lern- und lehrbare Methode der Bearbeitung, die unabhängig von der Person des Bearbeiters vergleichbare Ergebnisse liefert. Hier wurde nun ein in der thematischen Kartographie als Anleitung zu planmäßigen Vorgehen bewährtes System von Arbeitsschritten mit einigen Modifikationen als Richtlinie für die Bearbeitung von Landschaftskarten eingesetzt. Nicht zuletzt wird die Arbeitsweise von den verfügbaren Unterlagen beeinflußt und entweder der Ableitung topographischer Folgemaßstabskarten oder der freien Bearbeitung thematischer Karten entsprechen.
    Description: According to a suggestion made by the 11th study group of Niederdollendorf a method of how to treat coloured originals of cartographic landscape representation has been developed and testet. A first stocktaking had confirmed the demand for such types of representation; although suitable techniques are available, a learnable and teachable method of treatment is needed which provides comparable results independent of the person incharge. In this case a slightly modified system of working steps has been used as a guideline for the treatment of maps which is a time-tested instruction for systematic procedure in thematic cartography. This method is not least influenced by the available records, corresponding either to a derivation of topographic maps on a consecutive scale or to the free treatment of thematic maps.
