    Notes: Abstract The Moon's surface, unlike the Earth's, displays a comparatively clear record of its past bombardment history for the last 3800 Myr, the time since active lunar tectonism under the massive pre-mare bombardment ended. From Baldwin's tabulation of estimated ages for a representative sample of large lunar craters younger than 3800 Ma, six major cratering episodes can be discerned. These six bombardment episodes, which must have affected the Earth too, appear to match in time the six major episodes of orogenic tectonism on Earth, despite typical resolution errors of ±100 Myr and the great uncertainties of the two chronologies. Since more highly resolved events during the Cenozoic and Mesozoic Eras suggest the same correlation, it is possible that large impacts have influenced plate tectonics and other aspects of geologic history, perhaps by triggering flood basalt eruptions.

    Notes: Abstract At the end of Iceland's settlement period in the 10th century, a great basalt fissure eruption known as Eldgjá (Fire Chasm) occurred near the southern settlements and destroyed a portion of them. This lava outpouring was one of the two largest terrestrial fissure eruptions of the last 11 centuries. Historical documents from Iceland, western Europe, and the Middle East are used to trace the eruption's possible climatic and demographic consequences. The cloud of aerosols from the eruption, traversing northern Europe, dimmed and reddened the Sun. There followed a very cold winter, famine, and a widespread disease epidemic during the next year and, again, 5 to 7 years after the eruption, probably as a result of the long-lived stratospheric aerosol veil. Convergent lines of evidence point to 934 as the year of the eruption. Accordingly, it becomes possible to date within a year a prominent acid horizon in ice laid down in central Greenland and, tentatively, to interpret some critical events and dates in early Icelandic history.

    Notes: Abstract Somewhere in the tropics, a volcanoexploded violently during the year 1258, producing amassive stratospheric aerosol veil that eventuallyblanketed the globe. Arctic and Antarctic ice coressuggest that this was the world's largest volcaniceruption of the past millennium. According tocontemporary chronicles, the stratospheric dry fogpossibly manifested itself in Europe as a persistentlycloudy aspect of the sky and also through anapparently total darkening of the eclipsed Moon. Basedon a sudden temperature drop for several months inEngland, the eruption's initiation date can beinferred to have been probably January 1258. Thefrequent cold and rain that year led to severe cropdamage and famine throughout much of Europe.Pestilence repeatedly broke out in 1258 and 1259; itoccurred also in the Middle East, reportedly there asplague. Another very cold winter followed in1260–1261. The troubled period's wars, famines,pestilences, and earthquakes appear to havecontributed in part to the rise of the Europeanflagellant movement of 1260, one of the most bizarresocial phenomena of the Middle Ages. Analogies can bedrawn with the climatic aftereffects and Europeansocial unrest following another great tropicaleruption, Tambora in 1815. Some generalizations aboutthe climatic impacts of tropical eruptions are madefrom these and other data.
