Notes: Polarized neutron measurements are presented which show clearly that "forbidden'' and allowed magnons exist as underdamped excitations both below and above Tc in the three-dimensional metallic ferromagnet, Pt3Mn. ("Forbidden'' magnons are magnons created by neutrons polarized along the sample magnetization, which are forbidden at low temperature.) A model of magnons propagating through a crystal containing a 360° magnetization twist is studied, which indicates that "forbidden'' magnons can exist if the range of the short-range order is at least four lattice constants long, which is consistent with our experimental results and Edward's estimates.

Notes: In this paper, the options for the optical design for the UK-CRG beamline that is to be built at the ESRF are described here. This paper discusses how the options were narrowed to just two configurations and results are presented from ray-tracing simulations that were used to provide comparative flux outputs in order to assist in making the final choice. In conclusion, a discussion is presented of how a novel mirror concept, derived for one of the configurations, might have wider application. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Over the last five years, the large resonant enhancements of the magnetic x-ray scattering amplitudes at the MIV and MV absorption edges of actinide materials (U, Np) have been exploited in a series of magnetic diffraction investigations at the National Synchrotron Light Source. This work is reviewed with a discussion of measurements on a series of antiferromagnetic materials with contrasting magnetic properties, UAs, USb, U0.85Th0.15Sb, UO2, URu2Si2, and NpAs.

Notes: While magnetic excitations in rare-earth systems in which the full ordered moment develops at each site have been comprehensively investigated, the excitations in sinusoidally modulated magnetic systems have proved to be rather elusive. Moreover, the character of the magnetic excitations in modulated magnets has been a subject of theoretical interest for many years. Neodymium metal exhibits a complicated sequence of modulated antiferromagnetic structures below TN =19.9 K. Following our first observations of magnetic excitations in this element, we have now carried out an extensive study of the spin dynamics of Nd, in both the modulated and paramagnetic phases. The wave vector and temperature dependence of several branches of excitations, whose energies range from 1 to 16 meV, have been measured and will be discussed in detail. Additionally, some results of the field dependence of the excitations will be presented.

Notes: The advent of highly efficient (neutron) cold sources in research reactors has permitted studies of the excitations in condensed matter with improved instrumental resolution and at much lower energies than previously possible. For example, the triple-axis crystal spectrometer on the ILL cold source permits studies with resolutions in the range from (roughly) 1 to 0.02 meV (20 μeV). Even better resolution, extending below 1 μeV, is provided by the neutron-spin-echo spectrometer. In this article, recent work on magnetic systems, at ILL, using high-resolution inelastic scattering techniques, is briefly reviewed. We shall describe a spin-echo investigation of the critical dynamics of iron and then a series of triple-axis measurements of critical scattering and magnetic excitations in a variety of materials, USb, Rb2CrCl4, Pr, Nd, TMMC, CsCoCl3, and, finally, a polarized neutron study of CsNiF3.

Notes: Following the Haldane conjecture, the antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg chain of integer spins has a singlet ground state separated from the excited states by an energy gap. Recent numerical calculations on finite AF chains with S=1 supported this conjecture and provided an approximate value for the energy gap: EG(approximately-equal-to)0.4|| J||, where J is the intrachain exchange interaction. We report experimental studies on two Ni (II) quasi-one-dimensional (1D) AF with large intrachain interaction, J/k(approximately-equal-to)−50 K, Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4) (NENP) and Ni(C3H10N2)2NO2(ClO4), (NINO). In both compounds, the magnetic susceptibility along the three crystal axes steeply decreases below T(approximately-equal-to)15 K and no 3D long-range magnetic order could be detected down to 1.2 K. These features are consistent with the Haldane conjecture. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed on NENP show two energy gaps, with an average value of about 0.4|| J||, which are explained by a splitting of the Haldane gap by single-ion anisotropy.

Notes: Abstract Inelastic neutron scattering and computer modelling techniques have been used to study acoustic phonons in several layer silicate minerals. Experimental measurements have been made on four layer silicate minerals; namely samples of muscovite, Fe-bearing muscovite, margarite and chlorite. The longitudinal acoustic modes propagating along the [0, 0, ξ] direction of muscovite and Fe-bearing muscovite were found to be the same, within experimental error. The longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes propagating along [0, 0, ξ] of muscovite have been calculated using computer simulation techniques based on lattice dynamics. The experimental and calculated longitudinal modes of muscovite are in excellent agreement, thereby demonstrating the complementary nature of both techniques. The shape of both experimental and calculated dispersion curves was found to be approximately sinusoidal, indicating that interatomic forces act principally between nearest-neighbour atoms.

Notes: The beamline, which is situated on a bending magnet at ESRF, comprises a unique combination of instrumentation for high-resolution and magnetic single-crystal diffraction. White-beam operation is possible, as well as focused and unfocused monochromatic modes. In addition to an eleven-axis Huber diffractometer, which facilitates simple operation in both vertical and horizontal scattering geometries, there is an in-vacuum polarization analyser and slit system, mirrors for harmonic rejection, sub 4.2 K and 1 Tesla magnetic field sample environment, plus a diamond phase plate for polarization conditioning. The instrumentation developed specifically for this beamline is described, and its use illustrated by recent scientific results.

Notes: The ratio of the magnetic to the charge form factors of nickel has been determined by white-beam X-ray diffraction. The measurements were made on the new UK magnetic scattering beamline (XMaS) on a dipole source at the ESRF. The data comprise the three (h,h,0) reflections (4,4,0), (6,6,0) and (8,8,0) and the seven high-order (h,0,0) reflections (6,0,0) to (18,0,0), which doubles the range of wavevectors compared to previous studies. The data have been analysed using Hartree–Fock free-ion wave functions and core electron polarization effects were included. The results support the interpretation of neutron data obtained at lower momentum transfer for the eg and t2g orbital occupancies. The polarization of the dipole source is deduced to vary from 99.88 to 99.83% between 5 and 15 keV, respectively. This high value makes it an extremely suitable source for studies of ferromagnetism.

Notes: [Auszug] The exact nature of the confining medium determines the type of disorder and its effects, on the transition. For example, the superfluid transition of helium confined in vycor glass which has a compact structure with well defined small ( 70-A) pores, is considerably suppressed, but still has ...
