    Notes: Abstract Thin boron films were produced on Si substrates from a solid boron source and a hydrogen plasma. The plasma was generated using a 13.56 MHz generator and films were deposited with a forward radio frequency (RF) power of 2.0 kW. At pressures from 0.931–2.26×102 Pa under high hydrogen concentrations a capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) was observed whereas at low hydrogen concentrations an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) was observed. The films were predominantly deposited with an ICP but in one case a film was deposited using a CCP discharge. The deposited films consisted primarily of boron, but they also contained oxygen and silicon. The films were amorphous at 225 and 350°C, but revealed X-ray diffractions at 475°C. It was concluded that the hydrogen concentration, RF plasma power and surface temperature as well as the plasma-boron source interactions strongly influenced the film thickness and composition.

    Description: When measured earthquake accelerations are used as a basis for structural design, then acceleration errors of a few per cent are usually acceptable. However a number of tasks in structural design, and in earthquake engineering research, require measured accelerations with errors limited to a few parts per thousand. Such tasks include those which call for the calculation of angular accelerations, the comparison of acceleration spectra or the calculation of relative displacement Accurate accelerations may be obtained from existing accelerographs by applying the results of an accurate static calibration to an accelerogram, and then applying corrections for the effects of accelerometer resonance. This paper concentrates attention on the correction of static errors, including sensing direction errors and cross‐axis interaction errors. For completeness there is a brief discussion of dynamic errors, which depend on accelerometer periods and dampings. It is concluded that earthquake accelerations may be obtained with errors of not much more than 0·001 g, the resolution of a typical accelerograph, at least for periods greater than 0·2 sec. When the accelerations have shorter periods, larger errors may arise due to the limited accuracy of the corrections for dynamic errors The static calibration of accelerographs, and the corresponding record correction procedures, are illustrated by application to the M.O.2 accelerograph.     Description: The SPAC (Spatial autocorrelation) method to analyze ambient vibration records was introduced by Aki (1957); Currently, this method is being used for the analysis of microtremor data from an array of stations: crosscorrelation functions are computed between pairs of stations, and then averaged for different station pairs, at the same interstation distance but with different orientation. In this article we propose the idea of exploiting recordings of microtremors over long times as a substitute for spatial averaging, as was suggested in Aki (1957). This idea has several advantages. The two most important are, first, that it is not required to obtain simultaneous recordings using an array of stations, whose locations must obey a very rigid scheme; and second, the ability to obtain results for a large number of closely-spaced distance intervals. Our proposal is tested using data from the Parkway, Wainuiomata, temporary array. These data are supplemented with additional measurements performed during February 2003, to resolve an uncertainty regarding the low-frequency part of our results. Given the irregular distribution of our array, we are able to obtain results for many different station pairs. The phase-velocity dispersion curves we derive from our measurements, interpreted with the SPAC method, are compared with previous results in this sedimentary basin. Our results suggest that the SPAC method is more general than appears in recently published papers.
