Article Pneumocystis jirovecii is a fungus that can cause life-threatening pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. Here, the authors sequence the genomes of P. jirovecii and two other Pneumocystis species, and show the unexpected absence of chitin (a near universal fungal cell wall component).
