Polymerization of Ethylene on Mechanically Activated Silicon Dioxide SurfacesMechanical activation of silicon dioxide in an ethylene atmosphere causes polymerization of ethylene on the silicon dioxide surface. Specific area and degree of amorphization strongly depend on the milling atmosphere (ethylene, argon). ESR and DTA measurements have shown that two paramagnetic centers of different structures are formed in activated quartz which influence the polymerization. One of the centers was also obtained by irradiation. In the polymerized organic phase alkyl groups with a high content of methyl and carbonyl groups were detected by i.r. spectroscopy.

Bei der mechanischen Aktivierung von Siliciumdioxid in Äthylenatmosphäre treten Polymerisationsreaktionen des Äthylens an den SiO2-Oberflächen auf, wobei die organische Phase der Proben bis zu 4 Masse-% anwächst. Spezifische Oberfläche und Amorphisierungsgrad der Quarzmehlchargen hängen stark von der Mahlatmosphäre (Äthylen, Argon) ab. EPR- und DTA-Untersuchungen zeigen, daß im aktivierten Quarz zwei aktive Zentren auftreten, die strukturell verschieden sind und bei der Aufpolymerisation eine Rolle spielen. Eines der Zentren wurde auch bei der Strahlenaktivierung erhalten.In der aufpolymerisierten organischen Phase wurde durch IR-Spektroskopie die Anwesenheit von Alkylgruppen mit einem hohen Methylgehalt und das Auftreten von Carbonylgruppen nachgewiesen.
