Notes:
Radical polymerizations and copolymerizations of 2,3-epoxypropyl methacrylate (1) and its reaction product with 2-phenylbutyric acid (2), 2-hydroxytrimethylene methacrylate 2-phenylbutyrate (3), were studied using 2,2′-azodiisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide, or H2O2 (with UV irradiation) as initiators, and also the influence of the experimental conditions (temperature, concentration, time) on the yield. Due to the reactivity of the oxirane moiety, poly(2,3-epoxy-propyl methacrylate) can easily be modified by ring opening reactions, e.g. with carboxylic acids.
