    Description: A fiber optic–based spectrometry system was developed to enable automated, long-term measurements of spectral irradiance in sea ice environments. This system utilizes a single spectrometer module that measures the irradiance transmitted by multiple optical fibers, each coupled to the input fiber of the module via a mechanical rotary multiplexer. Small custom-printed optical diffusers, fixed to the input end of each fiber, allow these probes to be frozen into ice auger holes as small as 5 cm in diameter. Temperature-dependent biases in the spectrometer module and associated electronics were examined down to −40°C using an environmental chamber to identify any artifacts that might arise when operating these electronic and optical components below their vendor-defined lower temperature limits. The optical performance of the entire system was assessed by freezing multiple fiber probes in a 1.2-m-tall ice column, illuminating from above with a light source, and measuring spectral irradiance distributions at different depths within the ice column. Results indicated that the radiometric sensitivity of this fiber-based system is comparable to that of commercially available oceanographic spectroradiometers.

    Notes: The mechanical properties of as-cast and hot-forging duplex stainless steel samples withthe same compositions were characterized by nanoindentation. The effect of surface treating methodand working state of the sample on the nanoindentation results of ferrite and austenite were discussed.The results show that the Young’s modulus and hardness of ferrite and austenite may be affected bythe treating method of sample surface. The difference of Young’s modulus average of ferrite oraustenite between as-cast and hot-forging duplex stainless steel samples is not great, but the hardnessaverage of ferrite or austenite in hot-forging sample is obviously higher than those of as-cast sample.The difference of hardness between ferrite and austenite in the same sample is not great, but theyoung’s modulus of ferrite is higher than that of austenite

    Notes: Metal dusting is a catastrophic corrosion phenomenon that leads to the disintegration ofstructural metals and alloys into dust composed of fine particles of the metal/alloy and carbon at hightemperature. Considerable research efforts has been taken on the initiation of metal dusting in thealloy since it was observed. However, the previous researches were focused mostly on the initiationmechanisms of metal dusting without external applied loads. In fact, structural materials are mostlyused with external applied loads. It is thus necessary to study the initiation and propagationmechanism of metal dusting in the stressed condition. In the present work pure bending testing ofCr-Mo alloy in metal dusting condition was performed. The laboratory experiments were performedat 560°C, using a synthesis gas mixture with composition 75%H2 + 25%CO. The maximum bendingstresses were 100MPa, 50MPa, 10MPa and 0MPa, respectively. Post exposure metallographicalexaminations, SEM, EDX analysis were made in order to identify the difference between loaded andunloaded specimens. The effect of mechanical and chemical interaction on high temperaturecorrosion was preliminary discussed

    Notes: Nanostructured layers were fabricated on the surface of 0.4C-1.0Cr and 1.0C-1.5Cr low alloy steels by using an ultrasonic particulate peening (USPP) technique. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the nanocrystallized layers were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy, and nano-indentation test. Results showed that the average grain size in the surface nanocrystallized layer of 0.4C-1.0Cr and 1.0C-1.5Cr low alloy steel was about 5nm and 10nm, respectively. The nano-indentation hardnesses of the surface nanocrystallized layer were enhanced significantly and reach upwards of 8.0 GPa and 12.5 GPa, respectively

    Notes: SiC materials have excellent high temperature strength, low coefficient of thermalexpansion, good resistance to oxidation and good thermal and chemical stability etc. In this study,monolithic liquid phase sintered SiC (LPS-SiC) was made by hot pressing method with nano-SiCpowder an average particle size is 30nm and less. Alumina (Al2O3), yttria (Y2O3) and silica (SiO2)particles were used for sintering additives. To investigate effects of SiO2, Al2O3/Y2O3 compositionwas fixed and then ratios of SiO2 were changed as seven kinds. Materials have been sintered for 1hour at 1760[removed info], 1780[removed info] and 1800[removed info] under the pressure of 20MPa. The system of sintering additiveswhich affects a property of sintering as well as the influence depending on compositions of sinteringadditives were investigated by measurement of density, mechanical properties such as Vickershardness and sliding wear resistance were investigated to make sure of the optimum condition whichis about matrix of SiCf/SiC composites. The abrasion test condition applies to load of 20N at 100rpmfor 20min. Sintered density, abrasion property of fabricated LPS-SiC increased with increasing thesintering temperature. In case of LPS-SiC with low SiO2 content, has very excellent wear resistance

    Notes: In the present work, low carbon low alloy submicro-steel sheet has been developed successfully by severe warm-rolling (SWR) at 500 °C through a single pass. The result shows submicro-structure can be fabricated by severe rolling. The formation of the submicro-structure is attributed to the grain refinement mechanism induced by the severe plastic deformation (SPD). The refinement involves the cutting and subdividing of the original micro-crystals into ultrafine grains by dense dislocation arrays. To a certain extent, dynamic recrystallization in ferrite during SWR also seems to contribute to the formation of the submicro-structure. The thermal stability of the submicro-steel was investigated by annealing the steel at different temperatures. The investigation indicated that the submicro-steel can be subjected to annealing at 550°C without apparent grain growth. The unusually high thermal stability can be attributed to the pining effect of numerous uniformly distributed nano-precipitates in the steel. The sizes of the nano-precipitates belong to two different orders. The average diameter of the large precipitates is about 30 nm and the smaller one less than 10 nm
