Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Von Februar 1963 bis Juni 1964 wurden im Gebiet der Academy Bay der Indefatigable-Insel Mauser und Jahreszyklus von Darwinfinken studiert.
Notes: Summary The moult and annual cycle of Darwin's finches were studied at Academy Bay, Indefatigable Island, from February 1963 to June 1964. In 1963 the only heavy rainfall of the year fell on 23–24 February, and was immediately followed by nesting. The next breeding season began in December, following moderate rainfall in late November. It was found that in February 1963, before breeding began, a high proportion of the adult finches were undergoing a wing-moult. When breeding began, this moult was arrested, and it was resumed when breeding ended, in April. By August moult had finished. A smaller proportion of the adults began a wing-moult before the next breeding season began, and this moult was again arrested when breeding took place. The moult regime described is very different from that given in the literature for Darwin's finches, which are said to undergo a single post-breeding moult. Some possible reasons are suggested for the discrepancy. The moult of juveniles was followed in detail in 1963, when the young birds were all hatched in March or April. Body-moult took place in May and June, followed in July by moult of the innermost secondaries and the irregular replacement of other flightfeathers. Later, in the last three months of the year, another wing-moult began, after which the young females were indistinguishable from adults and some, at least, of the males were in partly black plumage.

Notes: Summary This paper, based on a three-month visit to southern Guyana early in 1970, presents information onRupicola rupicola supplementary to that obtained byGilliard (1962) in the same area. In the course of observations at a dancing ground, a female was seen to visit a male on his court, to approach him and to nibble at his modified secondary feathers while he remained in static display on the ground. This was thought to represent precopulatory behaviour, but mating itself was not seen. Four nest-sites were regularly checked; eggs were laid between 2nd March and 25th April. A study of museum specimens shows that the moult mainly takes place in the middle of the year and almost certainly must overlap the breeding season. The female's nest-building behaviour is described. Saliva must be used to strengthen the mud used in the nest structure, since in its natural state the mud is too friable to hold together or to adhere to a rock surface. Details are given of two clutches of eggs. The incubation periods for two other clutches were 27–28 and 28 days. The fledging period was not ascertained as the young disappeared prematurely from the one nest that was regularly checked. A description is given of a 10-day-old nestling hatched in captivity. The food (exclusively fruit) recorded in samples collected from below nests and from a display ground from January to April is tabulated and discussed. 71% of the fruits recorded were from trees of four families (Araliaceae, Burseraceae, Palmae and Lauraceae) which are of general importance for neotropical frugivorous birds.

Description: The theory of the boundary element method is briefly reviewed with particular reference to the feasibility of elastic and inelastic three-dimensional stress analysis of complex structures characteristic of gas turbine engine components. Particular requirements of gas turbine analysis are defined, and examples of the use of a boundary element code designed for the three-dimensional stress analysis of turbine components are presented. It is shown that the general-purpose boundary element code can accurately and efficiently analyze many of the gas turbine engine structures.

Description: A single stage compressor was designed with the intent of demonstrating that, for a tip speed and hub-tip ratio typical of an advanced core compressor front stage, the use of low aspect ratio can permit high levels of blade loading to be achieved at an acceptable level of efficiency. The design pressure ratio is 1.8 at an adiabatic efficiency of 88.5 percent. Both rotor and stator have multiple-circular-arc airfoil sections. Variable IGV and stator vanes permit low speed matching adjustments. The design incorporates an inlet duct representative of an engine transition duct between fan and high pressure compressor.
