    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the independent and conditional effects of organizational culture type and level of mission agreement on the organizational effectiveness of four-year colleges and universities. While significant differences are found for both culture type and mission agreement, there are important conditional effects on two of the effectiveness measures. The implications of these findings for efforts to enhance the effectiveness of colleges and universities are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Using the exploratory data analysis method of median polishing, this study examined the institutional and departmental satisfaction of women who relatively recently entered the academic profession. Results indicated that women's satisfaction with both department and institution differed by institutional type (Carnegie classifications) and discipline type (pure versus applied). Women in applied fields in Research II and Doctoral-Granting II institutions were much less satisfied with both their departments and their institutions than would be expected given their institutional and discipline types. Similarly, the institutional satisfaction of those women at Research I institutions and the departmental satisfaction of women in pure fields at Doctoral-Granting I's was lower than would be expected. Higher levels of departmental satisfaction were shown by women in pure fields at Liberal Arts I institutions.

    Notes: Abstract A linear causal model is postulated and path analysis procedures are used to examine the direct, indirect, and total influence of 39 variables (grouped into eight general measures) on the salaries of 24.461 faculty members associated with virtually every discipline and type of postsecondary institution in the academic community. The results show wide variation in the relative influence of characteristics of postsecondary institutions and the personal and professional characteristics of faculty members on faculty salaries. The implications of these findings are discussed and specific guidelines are provided to assist those interested in examining the external and internal consistency of the faculty salary structures of their respective institutions.

    Notes: Abstract A causal model is proposed and estimated to assess the relative influence of individual attributes, institutional characteristics, contextual-work environment variables, and multiple measures of job satisfaction on the intentions of faculty to leave their current institutions. Special attention is given to similarities and differences among variables in the model for tenured and untenured faculty. Regardless of tenure status, younger faculty, those at institutions that have experienced decline and that have more autocratic forms of governance, and those that have lower levels of organizational and career satisfaction are more likely to leave their institutions. Being a male, spending more time on research, and having a stronger record of scholarly productivity are positive influences on the intentions of tenured faculty to leave their institution, while salary satisfaction is an influential variable only for nontenured faculty. The research and policy implications of these findings are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Citation rates have been shown to be positively related to the scholarly stature of individuals, academic departments, and scientific journals in a number of academic disciplines. The results of this study show a much weaker relationship between the citation rates and perceived quality of education journals than reported in studies of other disciplines. However, this overall finding masks wide variation in the relationship for specific education specialty areas and between “core” and “allied” education journals. The implications of these findings for subsequent research on the complex process of knowledge diffusion and utilization are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Growing interest in the study of the roles of scientific journals in the diffusion and utilization of knowledge has preceded fundamental research on the stability of journal characteristics frequently used in such studies. The results of the current study demonstrate rather high levels of stability for selected journal characteristics and the stability of the relationships among the characteristics over a 4-year period. These findings for education journals are compared to similar results obtained in an earlier study of psychology journals.
