    Notes: Bodo saltans was isolated from a chalk stream and fed with pure cultures of seven bacteria obtained from the same river. The flagellates were allowed to migrate into suspensions of either of two bacterial species in a T-maze at 20–22°C. There was a significant difference (P 〈 0.01) between the numbers of flagellates which migrated into suspensions of different bacteria, which were subsequently arranged in an order of “attractiveness” to the flagellate. Bodo saltans grew successfully in monoxenic suspensions of all seven bacterial strains, but more rapid growth occurred with non-flagellated than with flagellated bacteria; this may be because while feeding, B. saltans tends to associate with surfaces where non-flagellated bacteria may also congregate. The efficiency with which B. saltans is able to utilize different bacteria may be influenced by the motility or secretory activities of the bacteria. There was no incontrovertible evidence that B. saltans responds to specific bacterial attractants.

    Notes: This paper forms a sequel to that describing the physical and chemical aspects of Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes (Wilson et al., 1975).General accounts of the phytoplankton, zooplankton, macrophytes, littoral and benthic faunas, and fish are presented, based on surveys undertaken between 1966 and 1973.The spring diatom blooms (principally Asterionella) are correlated with silica and phosphate depletion in both lakes, while growths of blue-green (principally Microcystis) in the summer and autumn are correlated with low values of nitrate and saline ammonia.The principal zooplankter in both lakes is Daphnia hyalina. Daphnia pulex was found very commonly in Blagdon in 1970/71, but has not been recorded since. The Daphnia in Chew are smaller in size than those in Blagdon.Blagdon is richer in abundance and number of species of littoral animals, and in macrophyte development, than is Chew. The benthos of both lakes is very similar, except that Blagdon has a well-established population of Anodonta cygnaea, while in Chew the species has apparently only recently become established.Both lakes are maintained artificially as trout fisheries. Other fish present include eels, sticklebacks, and gudgeon. Roach and Perch are found in Chew only. An outline account of their food is given based on stomach content analysis, and shows that trout feed principally on chironomid pupae in spring, and on small fish in autumn.

    Notes: Chew Valley and Blagdon Lakes are two shallow, hard-water, lowland eutrophic reservoirs, situated near Bristol in the south-west of England.Chew Lake is more turbid and richer in plankton but poorer in macrophytes than Blagdon, and is more exposed to wind action. Both lakes show evidence of transient stratification in the summer coupled to deoxygenation of the bottom water, which has led to release of nutrients from the sediments.Severe algal blooms in Chew Lake in 1968 and the consequent filtration difficulties led to the establishment of a collaborative research programme between the University of Bristol and the Bristol Waterworks Company, to define the present biological status of the lakes, and to predict their possible future development. The work covers a wide range of measurements and observations on the limnological conditions of the lakes, which form an elegantly contrasted pair, and this paper describes their general physical and chemical features.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1Surfaces in flowing water are covered by boundary layers within which the velocity of flow ranges between zero at the surface and the velocity of the main stream at the limits of the boundary layer.2Many organisms are small enough to live entirely within the boundary layer and so are subjected to much smaller drag forces than if they were exposed to the main stream velocity.3The form and extent of boundary layers at different stream velocities around selected structures, representing leaves and stems, have been calculated and presented graphically.4These data provide a basis for the estimation of shear stresses on substrate surfaces and of forces exerted upon organisms of different sizes that live within the boundary layers around such surfaces, when exposed to different current velocities. Values for shear stresses on bacteria calculated in this way lie within the range of shear stresses required to detach bacteria from surfaces experimentally.

    Notes: Summary Laboratory growth rates of six species of Gymnamoebia, isolated from English chalk streams and cultured on bacteria, have been determined at four different temperatures. Generation times ranged from 4.46 to 33.3 h. A linear relationship between log10 specific growth rate and the reciprocal of the absolute temperature was demonstrated for four species. A significant regression of log10 generation time on log10 cell volume was obtained for data on amoebae in combination with data on ciliates taken from the literature. This regression may be used to predict the growth rates of other species of amoebae and ciliates of known cell volume.

    Notes: Abstract The abundance and biomass of marine planktonic ciliates were determined at monthly intervals at two stations in Southampton Water between June 1986 and June 1987. The two stations, an outer one at Calshot and an inner one at N. W. Netley, were subject to differing marine and terrestrial influences. The potential ciliate production at cach station on each visit was estimated from these data. Enumeration of ciliates and measurements of biovolume were performed on Lugol's iodinepreserved samples and potential production was calculated using a predictive relationship based on temperature and cell volume. Heterotrophic ciliate abundance and biomass were greatest at both stations during spring and summer months, with respective maxima of 16x103 organisms 1-1 and 219 μg Cl-1 recorded at N. W. Netley. Estimates of the potential production of the ciliate community ranged from 〈1 to 18 μg Cl-1 d-1 at Calshot and 〈1 to 141 μg Cl-1 at N. W. Netley, with annual values of 2 and 9 mg Cl-1 yr-1, respectively. Abundances, biomass and potential production estimates were generally greater at N. W. Netley than at Calshot. Carbon flow through the ciliate community was assessed using annual production values from both this study and the literature. The annual ciliate carbon requirement was equivalent to 9 and 11% of annual primary production at Calshot and N. W. Netley, and potential annual ciliate production was equivalent to 34% and 〉100% of the energy requirements of metazoan zooplankton at these locations, although comprising only 8 and 10% of their available food.
