    Notes: Abstract Starting from the statistical structural model of Alemánet al. (1988), we have developed an alternative to Stone's (1970, 1973; Aziz and Settari, 1979) methods for estimating steady-state, three-phase relative permeabilities from two sets of steady-state, two-phase relative permeabilities. Our result reduces to Stone's (1970; Aziz and Settari, 1979) first method, when the steady-state, two-phase relative permeability of the intermediate-wetting phase with respect to either the wetting phase or the nonwetting phase is a linear function of the saturation of the intermediate-wetting phase. As the curvature of either of these relative permeability functions increases, the deviation of our result from Stone's (1970; Aziz and Settari, 1979) first method increases. Currently, there are no data available that are sufficiently complete to form the basis of a comparison between our result and either of the methods of Stone (1970, 1973; Aziz and Settari, 1979).

    Notes: Abstract A linear stability analysis has been performed for an immiscible displacement of a nonwetting phase by a wetting phase in a semi-infinite system of finite width and thickness. It is found that instabilities become a more severe problem as the capillary number based upon the characteristic thickness of the system increases. A displacement can always be stabilized, if the capillary number is sufficiently small. As the aspect ratio (ratio of thickness to width) decreases for a fixed capillary number, the potential for unstable behavior increases. All of this means that a displacement in the laboratory is likely to be more stable than a similar displacement in the field. Since the solution to the base state assumes the analytical solution of Yortsos and Fokas (1983), the effect of the mobility ratio could not be examined.

    Notes: Abstract Chang and Slattery (1986, 1988b) introduced a simplified model of dispersion that contains only two empirical parameters. The traditional model of dispersion (Nikolaevskii, 1959; Bear, 1961; Scheidegger, 1961; de Josselin de Jong and Bossen, 1961; Peaceman, 1966; Bear, 1972) has three empirical parameters, two of which can be measured in one-dimensional experiments while the third, the transverse dispersivity, must be measured in experiments in which a two-dimensional concentration profile develops. It is found that nearly the same linear stability behavior results from using either model.

    Notes: Abstract A simulator for three-dimensional horizontal miscible displacements in porous media is developed. Using this simulator, we examine the initiation and development of instabilities, viscous fingers and gravity tongues. With the only perturbations to the system being truncation and round-off errors, a density ratio (the ratio of the density of the displacing fluid to that of the displaced fluid) different from one is responsible for the initiation of the instabilities, and an unfavorable mobility ratio (the ratio of the viscosity of the displaced fluid to that of the displacing fluid) is responsible for the growth of the instabilities. When macroscopic perturbations attributable to initially imperfect contact between the displaced fluid and the displacing fluid at the injection boundary are introduced, an unfavorable mobility ratio is again responsible for the growth of instabilities. Macroscopic perturbations play the same role as a density ratio different from one in initiation of the instabilities, although the manner in which instabilities develop is different.
