Notes:
Summary An automatic spectrophotometric reaction-rate method for the microdetermination of nickel(II) is described, based on its catalytic effect on the decomposition of permanganate in alkaline solution in the presence of acetodiphosphonic acid. The elapsed time for the production of a definite absorbance change is measured automatically and related directly to the nickel concentration. The effect of various parameters affecting the reaction rate is discussed and maximum tolerable amounts of interfering ions have been determined. Microamounts of nickel in the range 0.3 to 2.1μg were determined with relative errors of about 2.5% and measurement times of about 10 to 50 seconds. The coefficient of variation for the determination of 1.05μg Ni was 1.8%.
