Notes: Purpose - To prepare modified epoxy resins from resorcinol, cresol and phenol for improved adhesion and chemical resistance. To evaluate the properties of such modified epoxy resins. Design/methodology/approach - Epoxy novolac resins (ENRs) were synthesised by condensing epichlorohydrin with novolacs based on different types of substituted phenols for improving adhesion and chemical resistance. Various compositions were made by incorporating different proportions of polyamide resin. The chemical and adhesive strengths of the conventional epoxy and the modified epoxy resins were characterised. Findings - The modified ENR using substituted phenols showed significant enhancement of chemical and adhesive strengths over the conventional DGEBA resin. The modified ENR had an increased number of glycidyl groups (thus increased functionality) of resin, which was responsible for improved chemical and adhesive strengths over the conventional DGEBA resin. Research limitations/implications - The EPN resins used in the present context was synthesised from phenol, resorcinol and cresol and cured by polyamide resin of different amine values. Besides, it could be synthesised from phenolphthalein p-aminophenol and p-ter-butylcatachol, etc. Practical implications - The method developed provided a simple and practical solution to improving the adhesive and chemical resistance of cured epoxy phenol novolac resins. Originality/value - The method for enhanced adhesive and chemical resistance of cured epoxy was novel and could find numerous applications in surface coating and adhesive.

Notes: Conditions are described for measuring anthranilate synthetase, anthranilate-PRPP-phosphoribosyl transferase, N-5′-phosphoribosyl anthranilate isomerase, indole-3-glycerol phosphate synthetase and tryptophan synthetase in crude extracts from Triticum aestivum (wheat) plants. Only the last enzyme has been measured before in extracts from green plants. The extractable quantities of each enzyme in all plant parts at all stages of growth were sufficient to synthesize the amount of tryptophan present within the same tissue in 48 h. Anthranilate synthetase activity was the lowest of the five enzyme activities and was the only one inhibited by tryptophan in vitro, indicating that this enzyme may be the control point in tryptophan biosynthesis in wheat plants.

Notes: Abstract The continuum energy distribution data of seven Be and five normal B stars have been presented in the wavelength range λλ3200–8000 Å. Empirical effective temperatures of these stars have been derived by comparing the observed continuum energy distributions with the computed energy distributions given by Kurucz (1979). The effective temperatures of all observed be stars except KX And found here are in fair agreement with those of normal B stars. The Be stars KY And, EW Lac, and LQ And show normal continuum energy distributions over the whole observed wavelength range. The Be stars ES Vul and 6 Cyg show moderate near-infrared excess emission longward of λ6000 Å.o And shows Balmer jump slightly in absorption and 6 Cyg shows slightly in emission. The variable nature of the Be stars has been discussed. The Be star KX And shows a peculiar type of continuum energy distribution. The continuum energy distribution of KX And has been discussed in relation to its binary nature. No excess or deficiency in the mean flux of normal B stars was detected.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of continuum energy distributions in the wavelength region λλ3200–11 000 Å, effective temperature for 14 Wolf-Rayet stars are estimated by comparing with Kurucz (1979) model atmospheres. The continuum energy distribution curve shows strong infrared excess emissions above of λ5000 Å in every star.

Notes: Abstract The observed times of minimum light derived from the photometry of the Wolf-Rayet eclipsing binary stars CQ Cep and V444 Cyg are used to estimate the mass-loss rate of the Wolf-Rayet components in several modes of mass-loss and mass-exchange.

Notes: Abstract The continuum energy distributions of four Be stars — namely, HR 7708, HR 7807, HR 7927, and HR 8171 alongwith two normal B stars HR 7426 and HR 7613 are presented in the wavelength region λλ3200–7800 Å. By a comparison the observed continuum energy distribution with that of theoretical models given by Kurucz (1979), their effective temperatures are determined and discussed. The observed energy distribution curves show near infrared excess emission longward of λ6000 Å for HR 7807 and HR 8171 and a double Balmer jump for HR 7708.

Notes: Abstract The continuum energy distribution data of ten Be stars — namely, HR 1761, HR 1786, HR 1820, σOri, ωOri, OT Gem, βLyr, HR 7983, νCyg, and 59 Cyg — have been presented in the wavelength range λλ3200–8000 Å. The observed energy distribution curve shows near infrared excess for majority of Be stars and a double Balmer jump for HR 8047 and HR 8146. Empirical effective temperatures of these stars have been estimated by comparing the observed continuum energy distributions with that of computed theoretical models given by Kurucz (1979). On the basis of an HR diagram with evolutionary tracks for different solar masses the masses of these Be stars have been estimated. Position of these studied stars on the HR diagram suggests that these Be stars may be in the stage of core contraction after exhausting hydrogen at the centre and have undergone hydrogen exhaustion in the thick shell.

Notes: Abstract Mass loss rates for 9 LMC WR stars are determined using IUE, UV, and visible spectrophotometric observations. A good correlations of mass loss rate with effective temperature and luminosity is indicated by the data, in agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Notes: Abstract The continuum energy distribution of six Be stars, namely 25 Cyg, 31 Peg, HR 8758, 14 Lac, 12 Vul, and β Psc, in the wavelength region γγ3200–7800 Å, are presented. Comparing the observed energy distributions with those of theoretical models given by Kurucz (1979), their effective temperatures are determined. A near-infrared excess emission at wavelengths above γ6000 Å is seen in most of the stars.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of evolutionary tracks on the HR diagram the lower limit of initial mass functions for Wolf-Rayet stars are estimated. The lower limit to the initial masses of the Wolf-Rayet stars seems to be 20M ⊙ and in this respect there is no significant difference between the WN and WC stars.
