    Notes: The formulation of a straight beam element to eliminate the shear locking phenomenon is presented. The element is based on curvature so that the bending energy is fully represented, and the shear strain energy is incorporated into the formulation by the equilibrium equation. Four examples are chosen to verify the concept of the element employed and its capability of the analysis. The solutions obtained reveal that the element describes the behaviour of the straight beam quite exactly and efficiently, showing no locking and that it is also applicable to the analysis of both thin and thick straight beams.

    Notes: Two curved beam elements with two nodes and three nodes are designed based on strain fields. At the element level, curvature and membrane strain fields are approximated independently and shear strain fields are incorporated into the formulation by the equilibrium equations. The displacement fields are obtained by integrating the assumed strain fields. Two examples are given to verify the formulations and demonstrate the numerical performance of the two curved beam elements. Analysis results obtained reveal that the elements describe the curved beam behaviour correctly and show exceptional accuracy throughout a wide slenderness range.

    Notes: An Iterative Boundary Pressure Reflection (IBPR) method has been developed to improve the accuracy of the flow front generation and transient mold filling simulation in injection molding. The method iteratively calculates the virtual pressure reflection, either positive or negative, at the impinging melt front nodes which are to be relocated subsequently according to the new pressure field. The scheme is formulated into a finite element program using a power-law model and applied to the filling of polystyrene melts injected into an edge-gated circular cavity and a variable-gap-thickness cavity with an insert. The calculated results show very good agreement with the experimental results of the previous study by others in the position of the advancing melt fronts at each time step, weldline location, and pressure distributions.
