    Description: Codend selection of winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) in 76-127 mm mesh codends was examined from experiments conducted in Long Island Sound during the spring of 1986-87. The results show a slightly larger size at selection than was found in earlier work as indicated by the selection factor, 2.31 in the present study compared with 2.2 and 2.24 from previous studies. Diamond mesh was found to have a length at 50% retention about 1 cm longer (Lso =22.6 cm), and a selection range (3.4 cm) about 1 cm narrower, than square mesh in 102-mm codends. Tow duration varied from 1 to 2 hours using 114-mm diamond mesh. As has been found in previous studies, tow duration and Lso are positively related, with I-hour tows averaging 24.6 cm and 2-hour tows averaging 26.6 cm. The importance of the slope of the selection curve was examined in yield-per-recruit analyses by comparing knife-edge and stepwise recruitment. In all mesh sizes, stepwise recruitment provides a more conservative estimate of yield in the presence of a minimum size limit. Differences in yield estimates between the two models were generally small (1-7%), except in the largestmesh size, 127 mm, where yield is overestimated by 10% whenassuming knife-edge recruitment.     Description: The distribution, abundance, and length composition of marine finfish, lobster, and squid in Long Island Sound were examined relative to season and physical features of the Sound, using Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection trawl survey data collected from 1984 to 1994. The following are presented: seasonal distribution maps for 59 species, abundance indices for 41 species, and length frequencies for 26 species. In addition, a broader view ofhabitat utilization in the Sound was examined by mapping aggregated catches (total catch per tow, demersal catch per tow, and pelagic catch per tow) and by comparing species richness and mean aggregate catch/tow by analysis of variance (ANOVA) among eight habitat types defined by depth interval and bottom type. For many individual species, seasonal migration patterns and preference for particular areas within Long Island Sound were evident. The aggregate distribution maps show that overall abundance was lower in the eastern Sound than the central and western portions. Demersal and pelagic temporal abundance show opposite trends—demersals were abundant in spring and declined through summer and fall, whereas pelagic abundance was low in spring and increased into fall. The analysis of habitat types revealed significant differences for both species richness and mean catch per tow. Generally, species richness was highest in habitats within the central area of the Sound and lowest in eastern habitats. The aggregatemean catch was highest in the western and central habitats, and declined eastward. (PDF file contains 199 pages.)

    Notes: Abstract Root Growth Potential (RGP) has become the most commonly used and reported measure of seedling quality. It has also been used to predict field performance after planting, but not everyone agrees that this is an appropriate use. The authors were solicited by the “Making the Grade” Organizing Committee to engage in a debate on the topic “Does Root Growth Potential (RGP) predict Field Performance” with D. G. Simpson arguing the affirmative position and G. A. Ritchie the negative. Simpson's key debate points are: (1) RGP predicts actual field performance when trees are dead __ dead trees do not grow, (2) RGP predicts field performance potential when water uptake is dependent on new root growth, and (3) RGP is a practical tool to monitor and improve reforestation system performance. Ritchie, arguing against the proposition, maintains that: (1) the logic which underlies the dependence of Field Performance on rapid root growth after planting is flawed, i.e. root growth immediately following planting rarely occurs because soils during the planting season are generally below the threshold temperature for root growth, and (2) RGP does not provide enough information about the complex of interacting factors which control Field Performance to give reliable, consistent predictions. The authors conclude by proposing a conceptual model which accommodates both positions.

    Notes: Vinculin is a major cytoskeletal component in striated muscle, where it has been reported to form a rib-like structure between the cell membrane and the Z-disk termed a costamere. This arrangement of vinculin has been purported to be involved in the alignment of the myofibrils. However, the three-dimensional arrangement of vinculin in relation to the Z-disk of the myofibril was not known. In the present study, we examined the distribution of vinculin in striated muscle with monospecific antibodies using immunofluorescence and laser scanning confocal microscopy. Isolated cardiac and skeletal muscle cells from a variety of species, tissue sections, and neonatal myocytes with developing myofibrils were examined. Optical sectioning in the X-Y and X-Z planes demonstrated that vinculin immunoreactivity was heaviest at the periphery of the cell; however, the immunoreactivity was also distributed within the Z-disk although at a relatively reduced level. This distribution is potentially significant in understanding the physiological significance of vinculin in striated muscle function and in myofi-brillogenesis.

    Description: Interior spruce (Piceaglaucaengelmannii complex), lodgepole pine (Pinuscontorta Dougl.), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii (Mirb.) Franco), and western hemlock (Tsugaheterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) were grown from seed for 20 weeks in containers, with 18-h photoperiods. Fortnightly, over a 12-week acclimation period (September 7 – December 1) outdoors at Vernon, B.C., samples were taken for (i) foliage frost hardiness measurement, (ii) poststorage root growth capacity, and (iii) outplanting on forest sites. In all species, frost hardiness and root growth capacity increased with weeks of acclimation. Frost hardiness and root growth capacity were correlated with each other in western hemlock, lodgepole pine, and Douglas-fir, and with field performance (survival or growth) in interior spruce, lodgepole pine, and Douglas-fir.

    Description: Water use of individual Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco) trees was measured in two plots at a forest site in southern British Columbia, Canada. Average daily early summer water use by trees with diameters of 7.5-70 cm varied from 1.8 to 166 L. Sap flux density (cm3 water/cm2 sapwood per hour) was linearly related to shoot xylem pressure potential and was found to increase with increasing vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and short-wave irradiance (I), reaching maximum rates with VPD 〉 0.6 kPa and I 〉 200 W·m-2. Daily sap flux density varied among trees but was not related to tree diameter, so an average value of 1137.4 L·m-2 sapwood area was used to estimate average early summer stand transpiration for the two plots of 1.08 and 1.5 mm·d-1. A close curvilinear relationship (r2 = 0.85) was found between stem cross-sectional area increment and sapwood area. The relationship was only slightly better (r2 = 0.89) between area increment and early summer individual tree water use. Stand volume growth for 1988-1998 for the two plots was 36-47 m3·ha-1. Stem volume relative growth rate over this 10-year period is estimated at 0.027 and 0.029 m3·m-3·a-1.

    Description: Root growth potential (RGP) and needle conductance to water vapour (Gn) of container-grown interior spruce (Piceaglauca–(Moench) Voss Piceaengelmannii Parry complex) seedlings that had been subjected to mechanical (dropping), low-temperature (−15 °C), or heat (35 °C) stresses were determined prior to planting on two forest sites. Field performance measured as survival, height, stem diameter, stem volume, and mean stem volume relative growth rate (RGR) was assessed for each of the 4 years following planting. RGP, Gn, and field performance did not differ between mechanically stressed and nonstressed seedlings. Low temperature and heat stresses reduced RGP, Gn, and field performance of some batches of seedlings, indicating that stock lots with different nursery cultural history had substantially different stress resistance. RGP and Gn were correlated with field performance such that for RGP greater than five new roots per seedling, high (〉80%) survival and to a lesser extent greater growth occurred, whereas for RGP less than five new roots per seedling, survival and growth were unpredictable. High survival and better growth occurred for stock lots having Gn 〉 50 mmol•m−2•s−1, while for Gn 〈 50 mmol•m−2•s−1, survival decreased. Preplanting stress effects on growth were small and due to RGR reductions in the first field season, which are projected to result in a time delay of 1 year or less in trees reaching a height of 150 cm and a stem diameter of 3.5 cm.

    Description: The effects of 1-napthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 3-indolebutyric acid (IBA) soil drenches on lateral root formation and growth of interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco) seedlings were studied. At rates between 10−3 and 10−5 M, NAA was more effective than IBA in stimulating first-order lateral root formation. Seedling age influenced the degree of NAA-induced lateral root formation. At three different nurseries the greatest number of lateral roots was produced by seedlings receiving 10−4 M (18.62 mgL−1) NAA 30 days after sowing. Shoot height and dry weight were reduced, although not at the expense of root growth in some cases.
