    Notes: Abstract A general predictive model for the mechanical analysis of isothermal and non-isothermal saturated-unsaturated porous materials is presented. The model is developed along the lines of Biot's theory and applies both for high water content and for low to medium water content in the pore space. Due to the similarity of the matrices in both situations, even if the transfer mechanisms are different, a single computer program can handle all of them. Examples belonging to both domains in the isothermal case as well as to heat and mass transfer in deforming porous media are shown.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary Two- and three-field problems are often defined in domains which may be assumed as unbounded. The traditional approach for their numerical simulation, within the framework of the finite element method, is by simple truncation of the mesh at a finite boundary. This fact both results in a large number of degrees of freedom and causes often errors in the analysis, due to the difficulty of setting correct conditions at the finite boundary. This paper shows the possible errors of the ensuing numerical solution and points out the usefulness of the infinite elements to simulate the far field response. Three examples from the field of isothermal and nonisothermal consolidation are presented where the improvements in the numerical simulation obtained by the use of infinite elements are evidenced. These examples may be considered as representative for a series of other coupled problems involving partial differential equations with first order time derivatives.
    Notes: Sommario Problemi di interazione fra due e tre campi sono spesso deflniti in domini che possono essere assunti come illimitati. Il modo tradizionale per la modellazione numerica di questi casi, nell'ambito del metodo degli elementi finiti, è quello di assumere frontiere fittizie in corrispondenza alle quali si devono imporre condizioni al contorno spesso di non facile valutazione. Questo modo di procedere comporta un numero di gradi di libertà assai elevato e può essere fonte di errori derivanti dall'imposizione di condizioni al contorno non corrette in corrispondenza della frontiera fittizia. Nel presente lavoro vengono evidenziati possibili errori delle conseguenti soluzioni numeriche e viene rimarcata l'utililità di elementi infiniti nella trattazione di questi problemi. In tre esempi di consolidazione isoterma e non, vengono messi in luce i miglioramenti della soluzione dovuti all'uso di elementi infiniti. Questi esempi sono rappresentativi di una più vasta classe di problemi accoppiati govemati da equazioni differenziali alle derivate parziali con derivate del primo ordine rispetto al tempo.

    Notes: The problems of consolidation often involve unbounded continua. The most common solution is then achieved by limiting the studied area through the introduction, at finite distance, of a boundary on which adequate conditions on the field variables are imposed. In this paper mapped infinite elements are used to model the far-field solution. Spatial discretization is hence performed on the basis of both finite and infinite elements. In two examples, solutions involving finite and infinite elements are compared with known analytical solutions and it is shown that an excellent agreement can be achieved by the use of mapped infinite elements.

    Notes: In this paper a mathematical model is presented, based on the application of an averaging technique, in which the equations governing the behaviour of saturated porous media are integrated (averaged) over the smallest dimension of the domain of the problem (thickness). This results in a two dimensional model, in which the three dimensional nature of the problem is accounted for. In fact, the solution is sought in terms of the mean values over the thickness of the field variables and of the transverse displacement components. For the solution of the resulting governing equations a partitioned procedure is employed, which improves the efficiency of the method. The proposed model is very useful in solving problems in which the spatial nature prevents the applications of two dimensional models.Examples are presented, which illustrate the validity of this approach.

    Notes: A numerical model for the mechanics of partially saturated porous media is presented where the flow of both fluid phases is taken into account. The attention is focused on the choice of the field variables so that the model may easily be extended to deal with the important case when the gaseous phase is at constant reference pressure and with the limiting case of a fully saturated situation. To solve the semi-discretized governing differential equation system in the time domain a staggered procedure is presented, which also allows for a straightforward solution of the two aforementioned cases. The stability and convergence analyses of the proposed solution scheme are presented for a 3 degree-of-freedom model system. In this way it is possible to assess the behaviour of the proposed solution scheme.

    Notes: Coupling and uncoupling between the equilibrium and mass balance equations in soil consolidation problems in investigated in detail. A procedure for judging the strength of coupling is indicated. In the applications, particular emphasis is given to subsidence problems where the coupled nature of the problem is still sometimes questioned.     Notes: The computer modelling of geothermal reservoir often involves unbounded continua. The traditional approach to such modelling is by simple truncation at a finite boundary. This results in a large number of degrees-of-freedom and precludes the efficient use of microcomputers for such simulations. This paper deals with the use of mapped infinite elements for the simulation of the far-field response. By comparison with an analytical solution, it is shown that an excellent agreement can be achieved in this way using a reduced number of d.o.f., hence allowing for the use of microcomputers in this area. Furthermore, the use of infinite elements allows realistic boundary conditions for the unbounded domain to be set.
