Description: This study was developed aiming at expanding knowledge regarding the negative effects of dams installed in the upper Paraná River on the fishing, especially in downstream portion of the Porto Primavera dam, in terms of the fish catch composition and fisheries yield of the most important fish species landed and socioeconomic aspects of fishermen operating in the study region. catch composition and biomass (kg*day-1) and fishing effort (fisher*day-1) data were analyzed. This data set was obtained through the database of the artisanal fisheries monitoring program developed by Núcleo de Pesquisas em Limnologia, Ictiologia e Aquicultura (Nupélia) State University of Maringá around of Guaíra (PR) town, consisting of information regarding the period prior to the closure of Porto Primavera dam (1987-1997) and after it starts operate (1998-2005). The data for characterization of the fishing infrastructure and socioeconomic status of fishermen have been collected through personal interviews conducted in 2004 in visits to riverine locations between downstream Porto Primavera Dam and Guaira town (PR). This work was divided into two chapters. The first chapter, entitled "Temporal variation in the composition and yield of artisanal fisheries of the upper Paraná River, PR - Brazil: the chronic effects of impoundments" revealed that buses present in the river, especially the Porto Primavera dam, promoted a significant change in specific composition, with major contribution of species independent of the hydrological cycle and low market value, and fisheries yield, especially on migratory fish species that has high commercial value. The second chapter, entitled "The structure and socio-economic aspects of small-scale fishing developed in the upper Paraná River, between Porto Primavera Dam and Itaipu Reservoir" showed the existence of a heterogeneous spatial pattern in fisheries infrastructure and socioeconomic status of fishermen in the region studied.

Description: Computational modeling has become a prominent tool to simulate physical processes for research and development projects. The coastal region of southern Brazil is very susceptible to oil spill accidents. Currently, oil is intensively transported in the region due to the presence of the Rio Grande Harbor, the Transpetro Waterway Terminal (Petrobras) and the Riograndense S/A Oil Refinery. Therefore, simulations under ideal navigation conditions for ships with potentially polluting loads are important because their use can reduce oil spills and toxic compound accidents in the environment. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to present a preliminary study of the contribution of external forces to a ship’s behavior over a simulation period of 5 h. The methodology is based on the development of a numerical model using LaGrangian formalism and the calculus of variations, besides Maneuvering Modeling Group (MMG Model). The external forces considered were the wind acting directly on the ship, waves driven by wind, the rudder, the force acting on the hull, inertial forces, and seawater density. The results indicate that at the beginning of the simulation, the inertial forces were of primary importance for controlling the trajectory of the ship. After 5 h of simulations, the ship had completely changed its trajectory due to forces suffered by the ship, classified according to MMG Model.

Description: The focus of this double-blind randomized study was on evaluating the effect of an aqueous extract of Mastruz ( Chenopodium ambrosioides L.) on the bone repair process in vivo. In total, 36 male Wistar rats were randomly selected for this study, and divided into 3 groups ( n  = 12): Group HS (Hemostatic Sponge), Group SM (Hemostatic Sponge with Mastruz) and Group BC (Blood Clot). In each animal, bone defects measuring 2 mm in diameter were performed in both tibias for placement of the substances. After 3 and 10 days, the animals were sacrificed, and the tissues were analyzed under an optical microscope relative to the following events: inflammatory infiltrate; necrosis; young fibroblasts; osteoclastic and osteoblastic activity; endosteal and periosteal bone formation; and bone repair. The results were assessed by using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests ( p  〈 .05). Inflammatory infiltrate demonstrated difference between Groups SM and BC in the time interval of 3 days ( p  = .004); an event related to the presence of the fibrin sponge and liquid of the extract, which induced a foreign body initial reaction. The presence of young fibroblasts ( p  = .003), osteoclastic ( p  = .003), and osteoblastic ( p  = .020) activity was statistically significant between Groups HS and BC in the time interval of 10 days; performance was related to the presence of the sponge within bone. As regards injured bone tissue repair, Group SM demonstrated a higher level of regenerative capacity ( p  = 0.004), due to a larger quantities of endosteal and periosteal bone formation, demonstrated in Group SM. The aqueous extract of mastruz stimulated bone neoformation, presenting wound closure with bone tissue at the end of 10 days. The aqueous extract of Mastruz stimulated bone neoformation, and presented wound closure with bone tissue at the end of 10 days. The use of Mastruz extract is a highly promising method for obtaining rapid bone repair for use in clinical practice.

Description: Military Navies have several missions in which due to their complex, dangerous, or disaster scenarios, unmanned vehicles are suitable to perform the necessary tasks. Besides other issues it is a current subject of research the trade-off between using many mission oriented unmanned vehicles or the use of less number of more robust and versatile multimission vehicles. Challenged by the technological advances achieved in mobile robotics and unmanned vehicles, and the need to develop in house know-how, this project aimed to put into practice the development of a concept design of a multimission unmanned surface vehicle, that can operate individually or cooperate with other systems whose development will be done in parallel on other projects. This unmanned vehicle, designated Unmanned Surface Vehicle for the Portuguese Navy - USV – PoN is part of project based oriented learning strategy in development in the Portuguese Naval Academy. It poses particular challenges related to t...
