    Notes: An efficient and versatile algebraic grid generation technique is presented for generating grid points in irregularly shaped and time-varying spatial domains. The method presented is based on the ‘two-boundary technique’ of Smith. The usefulness and the feasibility of the grid generation technique were demonstrated by (1) generating grid points inside one of the combustion chambers of a motored two-dimensional rotary engine and (2) obtaining numerical solutions for the flow field inside one of those combustion chambers.

    Notes: An efficient computer programme called GRID2D/3D has been developed to generate single and composite grid systems within geometrically complex two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) spatial domains that can deform with time. GRID2D/3D generates single grid systems by using algebraic grid generation methods based on transfinite interpolation. The distribution of grid points within the spatial domain is controlled by stretching functions and grid lines can intersect boundaries of the spatial domain orthogonally. GRID2D/3D generates composite grid systems by patching together two or more single grid systems. The patching can be discontinuous or continuous. For 2D spatial domains the boundary curves are constructed by using either cubic or tension spline interpolation. For 3D spatial domains the boundary surfaces are constructed by using a new technique, developed in this study, referred to as 3D bidirectional Hermite interpolation.

    Notes: A system of reaction-diffusion equations which governs the propagation of an ozone decomposition laminar flame in Lagrangian co-ordinates is analysed by means of compact operators and modified equation methods. It is shown that the use of fourth-order accurate compact operators yields very accurate solutions if sufficient numbers of grid points are located at the flame front, where very steep gradients of temperature and species concentrations exist. Modified equation methods are shown to impose a restriction on the time step under certain conditions. The solutions obtained by means of compact operators and modified equation methods are compared with solutions obtained by other methods; good agreement is obtained.

    Notes: Three techniques are presented to enhance the control of grid-point distribution for a class of algebraic grid generation methods known as the two-, four- and six-boundary methods. First, multidimensional stretching functions are presented, and a technique is devised to construct them based on the desired distribution of grid points along certain boundaries. Second, a normalization procedure is proposed which allows more effective control over orthogonality of grid lines at boundaries and curvature of grid lines near boundaries. And third, interpolating functions based on tension splines are introduced to control curvature of grid lines in the interior of the spatial domain. In addition to these three techniques, consistency conditions are derived which must be satisfied by all user-specified data employed in the grid generation process to control grid-point distribution. The usefulness of the techniques developed in this study was demonstrated by using them in conjunction with the two- and four-boundary methods to generate several grid systems, including a three-dimensional grid system in the coolant passage of a radial turbine blade with serpentine channels and pin fins.

    Description: A numerical study was conducted to investigate how bleed through a two-dimensional slot affects shock-wave induced, boundary-layer separation on a flat plate. This study is based on the ensemble-averaged, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations closed by the Baldwin-Lomax, algebraic turbulence model. The algorithm used to obtain solutions was the implicit, partially split, two-factored scheme of Steger. This study examined the effects of the following parameters in controlling shock-wave induced flow separation: location of slot in relation to where the incident shock wave impinged on the boundary layer, size of slot in relation to the boundary-layer thickness, number of slots, spacings between slots, and strength of the incident shock wave. This study also showed the nature of the very complex flowfield about the slot or slots and how the plenum affects the bleed process. The results of this study are relevant to problems where bleed is used to control shock-wave induced, boundary-layer separation (e.g., inside jet engine inlets and wind tunnels).

    Description: A method is presented which allows diffusion terms to be treated implicitly in the lower-upper (LU) algorithm (which is a commonly used method for solving 'compressible' Euler and Navier-Stokes equations) so that the algorithm's good stability properties will not be impaired. The new method generalizes the concept of LU factorization from that associated with the sign of eigenvalues to that associated with backward- and forward-difference operators without regard to eigenvalues. The method is verified in a turbulent boundary layer study.

    Description: A numerical study was performed to investigate boundary conditions for bleed openings that are needed in the numerical simulation of critical flow through turbojet inlets with bleed. Nine different boundary conditions (BCs) were devised and examined. Of the BCs examined, three were able to stabilize the terminal shock near the inlet's throat. This numerical study was based on the ensemble-averaged, unsteady, three-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations closed by the Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model. Solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations were obtained by using a hybrid implicit-explicit method (Beam and Warming/MacCormack). The multiblock grid system used in the solution procedure was generated by solving a set of elliptic partial differential equations. Solutions obtained were compared with available experimental data.

    Description: A comparative evaluation is made of three methodologies with a view to that which offers the best approximate factorization error. While two of these methods are found to lead to more efficient algorithms in cases where factors which do not contain source terms can be diagonalized, the third method used generates the lowest approximate factorization error. This method may be preferred when the norms of source terms are large, and transient solutions are of interest.

    Description: A method is presented for formulating the boundary conditions in implicit finite-difference form needed for obtaining solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations by the Beam and Warming implicit factored method. The usefulness of the method was demonstrated (a) by establishing the boundary conditions applicable to the analysis of the flow inside an axisymmetric piston-cylinder configuration and (b) by calculating velocities and mass fractions inside the cylinder for different geometries and different operating conditions. Stability, selection of time step and grid sizes, and computer time requirements are discussed in reference to the piston-cylinder problem analyzed.

    Description: In order to study numerically details of the flow and heat transfer within coolant passages of turbine blades, a method must first be developed to generate grid systems within the very complicated geometries involved. In this study, a grid generation package was developed that is capable of generating the required grid systems. The package developed is based on an algebraic grid generation technique that permits the user considerable control over how grid points are to be distributed in a very explicit way. These controls include orthogonality of grid lines next to boundary surfaces and ability to cluster about arbitrary points, lines, and surfaces. This paper describes that grid generation package and shows how it can be used to generate grid systems within complicated-shaped coolant passages via an example.
