Notes: The bitter components limonin and naringin in grapefruit juices were reduced by β-cyclodextrin polymer with pilot plant equipment using a fluidized bed process. This polymer has been regenerated 21 times without apparent loss in capacity. Reduction of limonin and naringin concentrations ranged from 30–59% and from 33–48%, respectively. Both limonin and naringin levels were reduced sufficiently in all juices to make them significantly preferred in flavor tests over their controls.

Notes: A β-cyclodextrin polymer was used to remove the bitter substances limonin and naringin from aqueous solution and from filtered orange and grapefruit juices using batch and continuous flow column treatments. Other components such as naringenin 7β-rutinoside, coumarins and flavonoids were removed, but the total soluble solids (°Brix), total acidity and ascorbic acid content of the juice were unchanged. The polymer could be regenerated by extraction with an organic solvent.

Notes: The bitter component, limonin, was quantified in orange and grapefruit juices after preliminary separation on a C-18 cartridge, or by direct injection of the juice onto a C-18 or C-8 high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) column. The lower limit of detection for limonin was about 1 ppm on a 2.1 mm i.d. microbore column and 2 ppm on a 4.6 mm i.d. analytical column. In a few orange juice samples, the preliminary separation step was necessary to eliminate interfering substances prior to HPLC separation.

Notes: Eighteen volatile compounds have been identified in a methylene chloride extract of a distilled fraction from loquat fruit. Individual compounds were identified by comparison of gas chromatographic retention times and mass spectra with those for authentic compounds. Major components phenyl ethyl alcohol, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, phenylacetaldehyde and hexen-1-ols, and minor components, ethyl acetate, methyl cinnamate and β-ionone probably contribute to the fruity-floral flavor of the fruit.

Notes: [Auszug] SURELY physicists do, or should, for convenience, always express wave-lengths in microns (µ) and molecular distances in millimicrons (µµ). Why not follow the same practice in dealing with vacua? The millimetre is a convenient unit down to, say, 0.1 mm., but 1/1000 mm. and 1/10,000 mm. have ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE general view held by philosophers seems to be that when temperature rises the gravitative attraction changes (if at all) by a function of temperature only. This leads to the results stated in the beginning of their letter by Dr. Lindemann and Mr. Burton. But it is commonly conceded that at ...

Notes: [Auszug] I SHOULD like to make a statement on the very suggestive contribution by “J. L”. in NATURE, June 15, regarding my result of a temperature effect for gravitation of +1.2×10−5 per 1°C. The confirmation, or otherwise, of this result will come, of course, from the laboratory, not the ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE uncertainty as to the charges arising on insulating solids when rubbed together has ever provided perplexities for the investigator and pitfalls for the lecturer. I have shown in previous papers (Proc. Phys. Soc., 1915, and Proc. Roy. Soc., 1917 and 1926) that a clean solid, say glass, may ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a well-known treatise on physics we find the following statement:—“By the third law of Kepler we are led to the conclusion that the same value of G (the Newtonian constant of gravitation) applies to the sun and all planetary bodies.” This conclusion appears to be fallacious, as we see by the ...
