    Notes: Abstract The effect of a preliminary illumination on the amount of polarization generated in the subsequently dark-polarized Kapton-H samples has been investigated by using the uv and visible radiations as an excitation source. The magnitude of this effect is governed by the two excitation parameters, viz. duration of the illumination (t ex) and the time interval (Δt) between the end of illumination and the outset of the polarizing electric field. A rise in the operating temperature makes the appearance of the phenomenon more pronounced. The uv radiation has been found more efficient than the visible one for producing the excitation effect.

    Notes: Abstract The photoinduced polarization in Kapton-H thin film has been studied by analysing the isothermal dark decay characteristics of photo- and dark-polarized specimens for different values of the polarizing parameters. The total polarization induced has been found to increase continuously with polarizing temperature but with polarizing field, it approaches a saturation. The behaviour of dark decay currents for photo and dark polarized identical samples changes with operating temperature. The phenomenon is explained in terms of the shift of electrons and hole demarcation levels under variation of temperature and illumination intensity.

    Description / Table of Contents: Der Mechanismus der Polarisierung durch Corona-Entladung wurde an Polyimidfilmen (Kapton) durch TSDC-Messungen untersucht. In den TSC-Spektren wurden drei Peaks beobachtet, die den flachen und tiefen Haftstellen (Traps) im Kapton zugeordnet werden. Wärmebehandlung hat eine Abnahme der Peakströme zur Folge, was auf die Verringerung der Anzahl der Haftstellen zurückgeführt wird. Bei Dotierung mit Iod wächst der Peakstrom auf nahezu den zehnfachen Wert an. Dies wird durch die Zunahme der Anzahl der Ladungsträger infolge der Diffusion von I2-Ionen in die Polymermatrix erklärt. Untersuchungen zum Zerfall des Oberflächenpotentials zeigen, daß der Zerfall im Licht viel höher als im Dunkeln ist. Nach Wärmebehandlung und Dotierung mit Iod nimmt die Zerfallsgeschwindigkeit im Dunkeln zu.
    Notes: The polarization mechanism due to corona discharge has been investigated in Kapton polyimide film by applying thermally stimulated discharge current technique. Three peaks were observed in TSC spectra. These peaks are attributed to the shallow and deep trap levels present in Kapton. Heat treatment causes a decrease in the peak current which may be due to the reduction in the number of traps. Iodine doping increases the peak current nearly ten times which may be due to the increase in number of carriers as a result of diffusion of I2 ions in the polymer matrix. Studies of surface potential decay show that photo decay rate is much higher than dark decay rate. Heat treatment and iodine doping increase the dark decay rate.

Die Photoelektret-Ladung nimmt mit der Beleuchtungsintensität zu und erreicht eine Sättigung in Übereinstimmung mit dem Reziprozititätsgesetz. Die Zerfallskurven deuten auf die Existenz von flachen und tiefen Haftstellen (Traps) im Kapton hin. Ultraviolettstrahlung erwies sich hinsichtlich der Photopolarisation als wirksamer als sichtbares Licht. Wärmebehandlung der Filme führt zu einer Verringerung der Photoelektretladung, was auf einer Abnahme der Anzahl der Haftstellen beruhen kann. Weiter wurde der Autophotoelektretzustand im Kapton untersucht. Die Untersuchungen sind für Anwendungen von Kapton in der Elektrophotographie und bei der Umwandlung von Solarenergie von Interesse.
    Notes: The photoelectret state in Kapton polyimide film as a function of intensity of illumination has been investigated using visible light and ultraviolet radiation. Experiments were carried out both with as-received and heat treated Kapton samples. The photoelectret charge is observed to increase with the intensity of illumination tending towards saturation which is in accordance with the reciprocity law. The nature of decay curves shows the presence of shallow and deep trap levels in Kapton. Ultraviolet radiations were found more efficient for photopolarization than visible light. Heat treatment results in reduction of photoelectret charge which may be due to the decrease in the number of traps owing to high temperature aging. The autophotoelectret state has also been investigated in Kapton. This study is useful for exploring the possibilities of using Kapton in electrophotographic process and solar energy conversion devices.
