    Notes: Polyurethanes (PUs) were synthesized from toluenediisocyanates (TDIs) and a polymeric diol having polydimethylsiloxane and polyoxyethylene blocks of the ABA type, ended with OH groups. Prepolymers, prepared in toluene solution using ratios [NCO]/[OH] ≥ 2, were crosslinked with triisopropanolamine (TIPA) (ratio [OH]/[NCO] = 1.1) (two-step process). PUs were also obtained with a one-step process using, contemporaneously, TDI, block copolymer, and, as crosslinking agent, TIPA or the glyceride of ε-hydroxyhexanoic acid. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMSO) was prepared as a reference material. The course of the reaction between block copolymer and TDI was studied by differential scanning calorimetry in the absence and presence of benzoyl chloride (BzCl). Without BzCl, with ratios [NCO]/[OH] 〉 2, uncontrolled crosslinking side reactions occur. The properties of the PU films obtained with the two methods were studied both for the density of crosslinking and for gas transport properties. The two-step polymers are less crosslinked than the others and are characterized by higher diffusion coefficients and by higher permeability to gases. The permeability order is 10-9 (N cm3 cm-1 cm-1 cm Hg-1 s-1) for CH4, O2, CO, and N2 and is 10 times higher for CO2. The selectivity for the couple O2/N2 is higher than that obtained with PDMSO films. Considerable selectivities are shown for the couples CO2/N2 and CO2/CO. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The homopolymerization and graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with EPR and EPDM rubber was studied in a variety of solvents using benzoyl peroxide and azobisisobutyronitrile as initiators. Under the conditions of our experiments the yield of homopolymer and of graft copolymer for the solvents used increased in the ordercyclohexane 〉 decaline 〉 toluene 〉 benzeneThe grafting yield depends particularly on the concentration of the rubber solution. The grafting mechanism is discussed in terms of different initiators (AIBN and Bz2O2).

    Description / Table of Contents: Das in Dimethylsulfoxid (DMSO) gelöste Styrol-Acrylnitril-Copolymere (SAN) wurde in Gegenwart einiger Basen wie KOH und Kalium-t-butoxid bei Raumtemperatur abgebaut. Die Zugabe von 4-Vinylpyridin oder Propylenoxid, die anionisch polymerisieren können, führte zur Bildung von Copolymeren. Ihre Zusammensetzung wurde mittels IR, Elementaranalyse und Fraktionierungstechniken untersucht. Die Anwesenheit von Gruppen in den Abbauprodukten wurde mit einem Spaltungsmechanismus erklärt, der Anionen erzeugt, die zur Bildung von Blockpolymeren führen.
    Notes: The styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymer, dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), has been degraded in the presence of some bases such as KOH and potassium-t-butoxide at room temperature. The addition of 4-vinylpyridine or propyleneoxide which can be anionically polymerized, has led to the production of copolymers. Their composition has been studied by IR, elemental analysis, and fractionation techniques. The presence of groups in the degraded products has been explained by a scission mechanism which gives rise to anions useful for the formation of block polymers.

    Notes: 4-Vinylpyridine macromers ending with methacryloyl functions have been prepared. Their reactivity in copolymerization with butylacrylate is considerably lower than that of 4-vinylpyridine monomer. Graft copolymers with butyl acrylate have been prepared and characterized.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wird über die Synthese eines vollständig aromatischen Oligoamids durch Grenzflächenkondensation bei niedrigen Temperaturen zwischen Terephthaloylchlorid und 1,4-Phenylendiamin berichtet. Das Produkt wurde bezüglich seiner physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften mit Hilfe von IR, Röntgenstrukturanalyse, Elektronenspektroskopie für chemische Analyse (ESCA) und Massenspektroskopie charakterisiert. Sowohl die Elementaranalyse als auch die Thermoanalyse sowie viskosimetrische und titrimetrische Methoden wurden zur Bestimmung des mittleren Molekulargewichtes des Oligomeren (3 bis 4 Monomereinheiten) herangezogen.
    Notes: The synthesis of a fully aromatic oligoamide by low temperature interfacial polycondensation between terephthaloyl chloride and 1,4-phenylenediamine is reported. The reaction product was characterized with respect to its physical properties and chemical structure by infrared, X-rays, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and mass spectroscopic techniques. Elemental and thermal analysis, as well as viscosimetric and titrimetric methods were applied to evaluate the average molecular weight of the oligomer, whose chain length consists mainly of 3 to 4 monomeric units.

    Description / Table of Contents: Es wurde die radikalische Polymerisation von Styrol in Gegenwart von Ethylen-Propylen-Dien-Terpolymeren und Ethylbenzol untersucht. Aus den erhaltenen Ergebnissen können die Übertragungskonstanten von Polystyrylradikalen mit Terpolymeren und Ethylbenzol berechnet werden. Die Ergebnisse weisen auf eine reduzierte radikalische Reaktivität des Terpolymeren in Gegenwart von Ethylbenzol hin.
    Notes: Investigations were made on the radical polymerization of styrene in presence of ethylene propylene diene terpolymers and ethylbenzene. The results obtained allowed to calculate the transfer constants of polystyryl radical to terpolymer and ethylbenzene in a mixed system. Meanwhile the same results showed a lower radical reactivity of the elastomer in presence of the aromatic transfer agent.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die durch direkte Luftoxydation erreichte autokatalytische Peroxydation von linearem Polybuten wurde in Abwesenheit besonderer Initiatoren untersucht; Hydroperoxyde, Peroxyde, „aktiver“ Wasserstoff und Alkohole wurden mittels chemischer Methoden in den Oxydationsprodukten und die Keto-Carbonyle qualitativ durch Ultrarotanalyse bestimmt. Die zeitliche Änderung der genannten chemischen Funktionen wurde ebenfalls bestimmt.Es zeigt sich, daß das Polymere in direktem Verhältnis zu dem Gehalt an aktivem Sauerstoff abgebaut wird, daß zu Beginn der Reaktion die Menge an Peroxyd vernachlässigbar ist, daß aber das Verhältnis zwischen dieser Menge und der an Hydroperoxyden zeitlich zunimmt und daß nach 2 Stunden Alkohole, Hydroperoxyde und Peroxyde in den Oxydationsprodukten in vergleichbaren Mengen vorliegen, während Säuren est nach etwa 8 Stunden Reaktionszeit auftreten.
    Notes: The autocatalytic peroxidation performed dircectly with air of linear polybutene in the absence of special initiators was studied; hydroperoxides, peroxides, “active” hydrogen, alcohols were determined by chemical methods in the oxidized product, and the ketonic carbonyls were determined qualitatively by I.R. analysis.The variation with oxidation time of the quoted chemical functions was also determined.It results that the polymer degrades in a direct ratio with the content of active oxygen, that, at the beginning of the reaction, the amount of peroxides is negligible but the ratio between these and the hydroperoxides increases with time and after about 2 hrs. alcohols, hydroperoxides and peroxides are present in the oxidized product in comparable amounts, whereas acids appear only after about 8 hrs. of reaction.

    Notes: The rate constants of the natural degradation processes of low density polyethylene and polypropylene films have been calculated on the basis of the molecular weights of weathered samples. Moreover, the optical densities, obtained by means of IR spectroscopy, indicate that the formations of carbonyl and vinyl groups are zero-order reactions.

    Description / Table of Contents: EPR- und EPDM-Kautschuke wurden mit wenig Cyclohexan gequollen und bei 80°C mit Methylmethacrylat unter Verwendung von Azoisobutyronitril oder Benzoylperoxid gepfropft. Die Pfropfausbeute in Abhängigkeit von Initiatormenge und Doppelbindungsgehalt des Kautschuks wurde ermittelt. Die mechanischen Eigenschaften von Blends der Pfropfprodukte mit Polymethylmethacrylat und Polycarbonat zeigen, daß eine gute Schlagzähmodifizierung erreicht wird, selbst bei der Formgebung mit der einfachen Preßtechnik.
    Notes: The grafting reaction of methylmethacrylate was done using EPR or EPDM rubbers swollen by a minimum amount of cyclohexane in the presence of benzoyl peroxide or azoisobutyronitrile and of the monomer at 80°C. The yield of the grafting reaction was evaluated as function of the added initiator and of the unsaturation content in the rubber. The products of the grafting reaction were used to obtain blends with poly(methylmethacrylate) and with polycarbonate. The mechanical properties indicate that a good toughening effect is obtained even if molding is done by simple compression technique.
