Notes: In the attenuated total reflection method of excitation of the surface polariton, the plane-wave reflectivity has a singular behavior for angles of incidence which nearly lead to the phase-matching condition. A technique for the elimination of the singularity leads to the usual two canonical equations governing the excitation of the surface polariton. The characteristics of the antiresonance in the angular response of the reflectivity are treated, and the effect of a small loss in the metal on these characteristics is also discussed.

Notes: For the general oblique incidence for which the grating vector is inclined to the plane of incidence, the diffraction of a plane wave by a plane grating is treated by a perturbation technique. The transverse electric mode and the transverse magnetic mode incidences are investigated. The copolarized and the cross-polarized parts of the diffraction efficiencies are evaluated, and their dependencies on the direction of incidence are examined.

Notes: An asymptotic treatment of power transport by guided modes in two parallel, identical planar dielectric waveguides is presented in the weak coupling limit. The small parameter is the factor by which the field amplitude decays from one waveguide to the other. The maximum power is transferred from one waveguide to the other periodically in the propagation direction, the spatial period being known as the interaction length. When the power in one waveguide is a maximum, there is a small amount of residual, undesirable power in the other waveguide. This cross talk is intrinsic to a coupled system. It is shown that the product of the intrinsic cross talk and the interaction length is a constant depending only on the parameters of the corresponding uncoupled waveguide. Also, this constant is identical to the transverse electric mode and the transverse magnetic mode. This cross-talk relation shows that the intrinsic cross talk can be reduced only at the expense of increasing the device dimensions.

Notes: A new method of fabricating fiber optic surface polariton polarizers is described which produces devices with well-defined lengths and fiber core to flat spacings. The results of experiments investigating the length dependence of the extinction ratio are interpreted through the use of a new theoretical analysis. Successful investigations of the dependence of the extinction ratio on the fiber core to flat spacing should be possible with further fabrication modifications.

Notes: A twist reflector is idealized by a surface which supports electric current in one direction only. When a transverse electric mode or a transverse magnetic mode is incident on a twist reflector, both types of modes are reflected. This property of the twist reflector to generate the cross-polarized mode is used in the development of a device that can rotate the plane of polarization of the incident electromagnetic wave by the rotation of the twist reflector about an axis normal to its surface. A ray-tracing technique is used to deduce the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization as a function of the orientation angle of the twist reflector. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the characteristics of the polarizer.

Notes: In an elastically isotropic semiinfinite medium having a free surface with a weak harmonic corrugation, the interaction between the Rayleigh wave guided along the free surface and the shear vertical and pressure bulk elastic waves propagating in the substrate is investigated for the propagation directions lying in a plane perpendicular to the average free surface and containing the grating vector. The governing equations of this interaction are deduced and are shown to be consistent with the requirements of reciprocity and power conservation. The theory is applied to determine the characteristics of the output coupler in which the Rayleigh wave guided along the free surface radiates the bulk elastic waves in the substrate as well as those of an input coupler in which the shear and the pressure bulk elastic waves in the substrate incident on the corrugated region of the free surface launches the Rayleigh wave. Techniques for optimizing the performance of the input coupler to achieve maximum excitation efficiency of the Rayleigh wave are examined. The characteristics of these transducers are presented with the help of some illustrative numerical results.

Notes: For an active dielectric film waveguide with different passive dielectrics for the cover and the substrate and with periodic corrugations on the upper surface, the characteristics of the second order Bragg interaction are investigated for the transverse electric mode with reference to such applications as frequency-selective reflector, couplers, and distributed feedback laser. Four canonical equations that are valid for a distributed coupler with two guided waves and two free waves, incident and radiated, one each in the cover and the substrate, are deduced systematically. The coupling coefficients are shown to satisfy all the requirements imposed by symmetry, reciprocity, and power conservation. From the solution of the canonical equations with the appropriate terminal conditions, the characteristics of the devices are obtained. The design parameters leading to the optimum performance of these devices are determined. For the distributed feedback laser, the frequencies of oscillation, the corresponding gain thresholds, and the relative power distributions in the two guided and the two radiated waves are obtained for the first few modes in the neighborhood of the second order Bragg frequency. The modifications of the characteristics introduced by the presence of a phase shifting section on the grating structure are analyzed for symmetrical and asymmetrical grating configurations. The effects of radiation and the phase shifting section on the separation of the gain thresholds of the neighboring lower order laser modes are investigated with a view to increasing the possibility of a single mode oscillation. Selected numerical results are presented to illustrate the important characteristics of the various thin film devices based on the second-order Bragg interaction.

Notes: Treatments of the three reflector polarizer and polarization control by selective transmission are given. A twist reflector consists of a unidirectionally conducting surface with a parallel, perfectly conducting plane placed behind it. The twist reflector can be used in the development of a device that can rotate the plane of polarization of the incident wave by the rotation of the twist reflector about an axis normal to its surface. The polarization angle of the emerging wave is determined as a function of the orientation angle of the twist reflector. The polarizer design can be modified to enable it to convert the incident linear polarization into either right or left circular polarization.

Notes: Asymptotically exact coupled-mode equations which govern the characteristics of distributive deflection of Rayleigh waves caused by a weak periodic corrugation of the free surface of an elastically isotropic half-space are deduced for the general case in which the wave vectors are not aligned with the grating vector. The theory is applied to obtain the characteristics of the selective deflection of a Rayleigh wave incident obliquely on a moderately long periodic array of shallow grooves etched on the free surface. The Brewster phenomenon of total transmission exists, with the Brewster angle depending only on the Poisson ratio. For angles of incidence sufficiently greater than the Brewster angle, the reflection coefficient is considerably larger than for normal incidence. For the special case of a 90° deflection caused by a grating whose length is sufficiently small, the experimental observations available in the literature are in good agreement with the present theoretical predictions. The dephasing effects caused by the wave frequency being different from the Bragg frequency and by the angle of incidence being different from the Bragg angle have also been examined.
