Notes: Abstract A chemical and X-ray investigation of the Fe-Mg-carpholites of Crete/Greece reveals a large variation in their Fe2+/(Fe2++Mg) ratios (0.68 to 0.05). The lattice constants a and b depend linearly on this parameter, and the magnitude of the effect is comparable to that encountered in pyroxenes. The similar behaviour of the lattice dimensions of both these minerals is explained by comparing their structures and pointing out the salient crystal chemical similarities.

Notes: Abstract The central gneiss complex of the Münchberg Massif consists of the Liegendserie at the base and the Hangendserie at the top. Metagabbros are found in the Liegendserie; eclogites occur in the Hangendserie. New isotope data revive the discussion whether a genetic relationship exists between metagabbros and eclogites in the Münchberg Massif. It is possible to relate the two types of rocks to the same protoliths by variable degrees of crustal contamination and magmatic accumulation. Therefore, a common magmatic origin may be assumed. Both the metagabbros and the eclogites were affected by amphibolite-facies metamorphism. The amphibolitization of the metagabbros was a prograde metamorphic event. Increasing temperature is indicated by inverse zonation of recrystallized plagioclase and increasing Mg/Fe ratios in garnet from core to rim. Geothermobarometry yields a temperature of 600°C and a pressure of about 11 kbar for the peak of metamorphism. In contrast, the eclogites underwent a first high-pressure stage at a minimum pressure of 14 kbar and a temperature estimated at 600°C and were subsequently overprinted under amphibolite-facies conditions at 10 kbar/700°C. A common magmatic origin of metagabbros (Liegendserie) and eclogites (Hangendserie) of the Münchberg Massif can no longer be discarded. However, the converging P-T-t paths reflect a different geodynamic evolution of the Liegendserie and the Hangendserie after magmatism and before amphibolite-facies metamorphism.

Notes: Abstract  K–Ar and Rb–Sr age determinations on muscovites and biotites and K–Ar age determinations on amphiboles are presented for leucocratic gneisses, amphibolites and (meta-)igneous rocks from the Zone of Erbendorf Vohenstrauss (ZEV) and the KTB boreholes located in the northeastern ZEV and leucocratic gneisses from the Erbendorf Greenschist zone (EGZ). The investigations were carried out to contribute to the knowledge of the tectonothermal evolution of the area and to the response of the isotope systems to retrograde processes including recent elevated in- situ temperatures in the boreholes. A memory of an early Ordovician igneous event is given by Rb–Sr ages of 480±5–475±5 Ma obtained on very coarse-grained relic igneous muscovites of metapegmatites from the ZEV. This memory is missing in micas from peg matoids of the drill site. Coarse-grained muscovites of gneisses from ZEV and EGZ surface outcrops and of gneisses and pegmatoids from the boreholes yielded maximum K–Ar ages of 377±3–371±3 Ma related to the end of the Devonian regional metamorphism in both units. Consistent K–Ar and Rb–Sr apparent ages of some muscovites from surface outcrops point to a fast cooling of the metamorphic rocks due to rapid tectonic uplift. The lack of a depth-related gradient in model ages of coarse-grained KTB muscovites is explained by post-Variscan stacking processes. For minerals from intermediate to greater depths of the KTB, a strong age dependence on grain size and disturbances of the isotope systems due to various late- to post-Variscan retrograde processes can be demonstrated. A strong decrease in K–Ar model ages with increasing depth as obtained for biotites from the deepest section of the HB borehole probably indicates time-integrated response of the isotope system to elevated in situ temperatures.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Late Cretaceous metamorphites, investigated in a profile near Lendas/Asterousia Mountains (southern coast of Crete), consist of the following lithological units (from the base to the top): massive ortho-amphibolites, which may contain diopside besides plagioclase and magnesiohornblende; cordierite-garnet-sillimanite-biotite gneisses; calc-silicate rocks and marbles with salitic pyroxene, pargasite, magnesio-homblende, cummingtonite, grossular-andradite garnet, wollastonite, and scapolite. Meta-ultramafics with anthophyllite, tremolite, olivine, and orthopyroxene are intercalated with the calc-silicate series. The mineral parageneses in the four classic bulk rock compositions — basic, pelitic, siliceous-calcareous, and ultrabasic — afford an opportunity to characterize the metamorphic facies in detail. From these parageneses, and from the Mg/Fe2+ ratios of coexisting cordierite and garnet, temperatures between 650 and 700°C and pressures between 4 and 6 kbar have been estimated for the conditions of metamorphism.
