Notes: Summary A diurnally fluctuating temperature was found to be almost an absolute requirement for the germination of Fimbristylis littoralis and Scirpus juncoides. It is demonstrated that in f. littoralis sensitivity to the amplitude of temperature fluctuation can functuation as a depth sensing mechanism under water. This species did not germinate at all in the absence of oxygen. S. juncoides germinated best in anaerobic conditions and at low oxygen concentrations, but normal atmospheric concentrations inhibited germination. It is shown that this requirement for little or no oxygen together with the requirement for a fluctuating temperature cause the germination of S. juncoides to be restricted to the upper layers of waterlogged soil.

Description / Table of Contents: Calculation of Force-Constants of AzidesWith the method of isotopic reduction the upper limits of the stretching force-constants fβNγN of any azides will be calculated with inclusion of all couplings, if one additional set of vibration frequencies of the 15NNN-rest is known. If only the frequencies of one azide are given, the force constants will be determined approximatively according to the method of nearest solution using two initial solutions. With growing asymmetric frequency νas(NNN) the stretching force-constants fβNγN increase and the stretching force-constants fαNβN decrease beside a part of 13 descripted azides. For the rest of azides considerable differences will be found. These show the influence of the rest of molecules of corresponding azides to their both nitrogen bonds βNγN and αNβN.
