    Notes: A hydrophilic polymer composite film (approx. 420 nm thick), with potential application as an interface for biomaterials has been prepared on nonorganic substrates, which include glass, silicon, and aluminum foil, using a glow discharge plasma polymerization technique. A thin film (110 nm thick) polymerized from hexane provided an adherent protective coating for the substrate material, and covalent bonding sites for the outer layer polymerized from N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. This outer layer provided the hydrophilic surface or interface. The two layers were copolymerized for a short period during transition between monomers to provide an intimate covalently bonded diffuse interphase. Preliminary in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility studies indicate that the hydrophilic film is non-cytotoxic, and does not increase the inflammatory response when compared with negative controls.
