    Notes: We performed isothermal annealing on a hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) sample deposited at low temperature in a glow discharge reactor. In order to change the hydrogen bonding configuration without affecting the silicon structure we choose a relatively low annealing temperature. We studied the dependence on the annealing time of the dark conductivity, photoconductivity, light-induced degradation of the photoconductivity, optical gap, vibrational spectra, and subgap defect density. As the annealing time increased we found an increase in the dark conductivity activation energy. This shift of the dark Fermi level toward the valence band was correlated with the growth of a peak in the density of states below midgap. From the vibrational spectra we obtained the microstructure parameter, which is indicative of the amount of hydrogen bonded as polihydrides and/or to some sort of internal surface. We used the bond-breaking model to fit photoconductivity decay as a function of illumination time, and we found a correlation between the Staebler–Wronski susceptibility and the microstructure parameter. This would mean that the stability of the material concerning light-induced degradation is related to the way hydrogen is attached in the amorphous network. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High-beta, low-aspect-ratio ("compact") stellarators are promising solutions to the problem of developing a magnetic plasma configuration for magnetic fusion power plants that can be sustained in steady state without disrupting. These concepts combine features of stellarators and advanced tokamaks and have aspect ratios similar to those of tokamaks (2–4). They are based on computed plasma configurations that are shaped in three dimensions to provide desired stability and transport properties. Experiments are planned as part of a program to develop this concept. A β=4% quasi-axisymmetric plasma configuration has been evaluated for the National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX). It has a substantial bootstrap current and is shaped to stabilize ballooning, external kink, vertical, and neoclassical tearing modes without feedback or close-fitting conductors. Quasi-omnigeneous plasma configurations stable to ballooning modes at β=4% have been evaluated for the Quasi-Omnigeneous Stellarator (QOS) experiment. These equilibria have relatively low bootstrap currents and are insensitive to changes in beta. Coil configurations have been calculated that reconstruct these plasma configurations, preserving their important physics properties. Theory- and experiment-based confinement analyses are used to evaluate the technical capabilities needed to reach target plasma conditions. The physics basis for these complementary experiments is described. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present experimental and modeling results for the subgap absorption coefficient of intrinsic and doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) in order to explore the limitations of the constant photocurrent method (CPM). To properly model the subgap absorption coefficient, we have developed a simulation computer program including all the possible optical and thermal transitions between gap and extended states. Tail states are assumed to be either donor- or acceptorlike and midgap states are assumed to be amphoteric. The defect-pool model is also incorporated in our analysis. We have fitted several experimental dc-CPM spectra by using a standard set of parameters for the density of states. Our analysis demonstrates that in undoped samples the true absorption coefficient and the density of midgap states are underestimated by the CPM measurement. This is due to a nonconstant electron lifetime in the energy range between 0.8 and 1.2 eV. On the other hand, we show that in n-doped or p-doped samples, the CPM provides the correct answer. The energy range for the Fermi level where the CPM fails in a-Si:H is clearly established. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We measured the effects of light soaking on the extended state electron mobility in intrinsic and n-type doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon samples. We obtained the temperature dependence of the mobility in the range 0–80 °C, using a recently proposed method [Dawson et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 63, 955 (1993)]. We found a decrease of the mobility as the degree of light-induced degradation increased. We suggest that these changes in the extended state transport are caused by an enhancement in the magnitude of the potential fluctuations introduced by the extra created charged defects. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The Tokamak Physics Experiment is designed to develop the scientific basis for a compact and continuously operating tokamak fusion reactor. It is based on an emerging class of tokamak operating modes, characterized by beta limits well in excess of the Troyon limit, confinement scaling well in excess of H-mode, and bootstrap current fractions approaching unity. Such modes are attainable through the use of advanced, steady state plasma controls including strong shaping, current profile control, and active particle recycling control. Key design features of the TPX are superconducting toroidal and poloidal field coils; actively-cooled plasma-facing components; a flexible heating and current drive system; and a spacious divertor for flexibility. Substantial deuterium plasma operation is made possible with an in-vessel remote maintenance system, a lowactivation titanium vacuum vessel, and shielding of ex-vessel components. The facility will be constructed as a national project with substantial participation by U.S. industry. Operation will begin with first plasma in the year 2000.

    Notes: Summary The pathway of interleukin 1 (IL-1) secretion from the cell remains unclear. IL-1β is the major form produced by human monocytes, and is synthesized as a precursor of 35kDa which is processed to the extracellular biologically active 17kDa form. We have examined the intracellular localization of IL-1β in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human peripheral blood monocytes, by immunocytochemistry and immunoprecipitation of subcellular fractions. LPS treatment slightly damaged the cells. Unstimulated cells showed very little immunolabelling. In contrast, there was heavy immunolabelling on LPS stimulated cells. Immunolabelling occured within the cytoplasm, nucleus and mitochondria. There was no immunolabelling on the membranous secretory organelles and the plasma membrane. Blebs of cytoplasm budding from the cell surface were immunolabelled, suggesting an alternative route of secretion of IL-1β from the cell. Immunoprecipitation studies confirmed these results.
