Notes: Inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy measurements on hcp single crystal solid He with q(parallel)c axis and q=0.45, 0.97, and 1.24 a.u. are presented. The crystals were grown in situ under a pressure of 600 bar at 5–7 K within a Be hollow cylinder. By subtracting a measurement on the empty Be cylinder, pure solid He spectra are obtained and discussed in terms both of the hcp He band structure and of excitonic excitation. The existence of an exciton at 21.8 eV above the 1s core level could unambiguously be settled. Clear evidence is found that the bottom of the conduction band is at 27 eV. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The requirements on the radiation source, the monochromator/mirror, the diffractometer, and the crystal dispersive analyzer for an optimum instrumentation dedicated to high-resolution resonant inelastic-scattering experiments are formulated. The possibility for the application of dispersion compensation is stressed. A provisional instrumentation at the HARWI-Compton beamline is described and test measurements of the resonant inelastic-scattering cross section of Cu for incident photon energies scanning across the K threshold and for scattered photon energies near the Kα1 line are reported. By means of model calculation the important role of correct absorption correction of resonant inelastic-scattering data is emphasized. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A review of the application of medium-energy resolution inelastic x-ray scattering spectroscopy on problems of solid-state physics is presented, where medium-energy resolution means the range around 1 eV. The review starts with a description of the fundamental information about electron density–density correlation, which can be obtained by means of IXSS, and how this information can be related to electronic excitation (band structure) and dielectric screening (dielectric functions). Then the necessary experimental synchrotron based setup for IXSS is demonstrated at the HASYLAB inelastic-scattering beamline as an example, where the method of dispersion compensation is stressed. As the first solid-state problem, investigated with IXSS, the following special features of electron density–density correlations in s-p metals and semiconductors are presented: (1) lattice-induced fine structure in the dielectric response of Al metal, comparison with theoretical calculations, (2) lattice-induced additional collective excitation, demonstrated on Be, (3) plasmon-Fano-resonances, detected in the dielectric response of Si, and (4) first direct experimental evidence for volume plasmon bands in Si by means of standing-wave inelastic scattering. The investigation of electronic properties of layered structures by means of IXSS is demonstrated by means of experiments on graphite and graphite based alkali-metal intercalation compounds. Finally, it is stressed that IXSS also allows the measurement of core excitation spectra, so that edge structures in the 10–1000 eV range of low-Z elements can be investigated using deeply penetrating hard x-rays in the 10 keV range, thus making accessible the edge fine structure of low-Z components of solids in environments, which forbid the application of VUV or electrons. Application of IXSS core excitation is demonstrated both on core excitation spectra of the 1s edge of Li in LiC6 intercalation compounds and on core 1s-excitation spectrum of solid hcp helium single crystals, grown and in situ investigated in a Be 600 bars pressure cell at 5 K. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A γ Compton experiment with an annular 241Am γ-source is described. The distribution of the primary intensity in the plane of the sample as well as the scattering angle distribution are evaluated by a Monte Carlo calculation to determine (together with the energy resolution) the total momentum resolution of the experiment. In order to probe the reliability of the experimental arrangement and of the data processing, experimental Compton profiles of water from samples of different thicknesses are compared with the results of an IUCr project.

Notes: When the coherent superimposition of two (nearly) plane waves is used as the initial photon state of an inelastic X-ray scattering experiment on solids (coherent Compton scattering), information can be obtained about the projection of nondiagonal elements of the one-particle density matrix in momentum space on the scattering vector q, provided the requirements of the impulse approximation are fulfilled. The double differential scattering cross section for this new scattering phenomenon is derived and then subjected to impulse approximation. It is further demonstrated that the standing wave pattern, which on passing the Bragg reflection range is sweeping the atomic sites, yields an appropriate approach to the desired initial photon state for coherent Compton scattering. Experimental coherent Compton spectra from 111 and 220 Bragg reflections are used to extract the corresponding projections of nondiagonal elements of the density matrix. Possible experimental improvements are discussed.

Notes: Abstract: The dynamic structure factor of Li with [110] and 0.88 a.u. 〈q〈 1.03 a.u., as measured with 1 eV resolution by means of synchrotron radiation based inelastic X-ray scattering spectroscopy (IXSS), exhibits, in the energy loss range between 3 and 12 eV, a fine structure, which appears as a resonance around 4 eV and an antiresonance around 8 eV, when the difference between the experimental -spectra with [110] and [111] is considered. In order to find out the origin of this fine structure we have interpreted recent TLDA (time dependent local density approximation) calculations of the Li- [#!ref12!#], which were based on the inversion of the full dielectric matrix, by utilizing a simple two-plasmon-band model. In this way the fine structure can be traced back to a Fano-like coupling of the discrete collective excitations (both the regular plasmon and the so-called zone-boundary collective states (ZBCS's)) and the particle-hole excitation continuum, mediated by the off-diagonal elements of the dielectric matrix, , where (1,1,0).
