    Description: Characteristics of the plasma that switches on tens of giga volt-ampere in an inverse-pinch plasma switch (INPIStron) have been made. Through optical and spectroscopic diagnostics of the current carrying plasma, the current density, the motion of current paths, dominant ionic species have been determined in order to access their effects on circuit parameters and material erosion. Also the optimum operational condition of the plasma-puff triggering method required for azimuthally uniform conduction in the INPIStron has been determined.

    Description: We investigated 32 net primary productivity (NPP) models by assessing skills to reproduce integrated NPP in the Arctic Ocean. The models were provided with two sources each of surface chlorophyll-a concentration (chlorophyll), photosynthetically available radiation (PAR), sea surface temperature (SST), and mixed-layer depth (MLD). The models were most sensitive to uncertainties in surface chlorophyll, generally performing better with in situ chlorophyll than with satellite-derived values. They were much less sensitive to uncertainties in PAR, SST, and MLD, possibly due to relatively narrow ranges of input data and/or relatively little difference between input data sources. Regardless of type or complexity, most of the models were not able to fully reproduce the variability of in situ NPP, whereas some of them exhibited almost no bias (i.e., reproduced the mean of in situ NPP). The models performed relatively well in low-productivity seasons as well as in sea ice-covered/deep-water regions. Depth-resolved models correlated more with in situ NPP than other model types, but had a greater tendency to overestimate mean NPP whereas absorption-based models exhibited the lowest bias associated with weaker correlation. The models performed better when a subsurface chlorophyll-a maximum (SCM) was absent. As a group, the models overestimated mean NPP, however this was partly offset by some models underestimating NPP when a SCM was present. Our study suggests that NPP models need to be carefully tuned for the Arctic Ocean because most of the models performing relatively well were those that used Arctic-relevant parameters.     Notes: A La-deficient manganite perovskite sample La0.54Ca0.32MnO3−δ was prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method. The Curie temperature TC is 272 K, about 10 K higher than that of La1−xCaxMnO3. A large magnetic entropy change has been observed and the maximum −ΔSM(approximate)2.9 J/kg K appears at its Curie temperature upon a 0.9 T magnetic field change. The easy fabrication and higher chemical stability make La0.54Ca0.32MnO3−δ a suitable candidate as a working substance in magnetic refrigeration technology. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A series of Fe45.51(Al2O3)54.49 (volume fraction) nanogranular films were prepared using the ion-beam sputtering technique. A saturated Hall resistivity of about 12.5 μΩ cm was observed at room temperature. With different annealing temperature TA up to 300 °C, the saturated Hall resistivity of the sample decreases only a little, which shows good thermal stability. The transmission electron microscopy image shows that very small Fe particles (smaller than 1 nm) embedded in the Al2O3 matrix, and connected into the network, with the ρ–T curve indicates that this Hall effect may originate from the percolation phenomenon. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In perovskite manganites La0.7−xNdxCa0.3MnO3 (x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.20) prepared by the sol–gel technique, large magnetocaloric effects have been observed. The maximum of the magnetic entropy change peaks at the magnetic ordering temperature. Compared to La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, an enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect has been obtained in the samples with Nd3+ dopant (for La0.5Nd0.2Ca0.3MnO3, the maximum of ΔSM is about −2.31 J/kg K). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A series of Co35(SiO2)65 (volume fraction) nanogranular films were prepared by ion-beam sputtering at room temperature. A tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of about 4% at room temperature was observed. With applied magnetic field of about 1.5×103 Oe parallel to the plane of substrates during fabrication, the TMR ratio of the sample increased up to about 5% at room temperature. The results of ferromagnetic resonance showed that the isolated Co particles embedded in the SiO2 matrix were pancake-like in shape. Thus the discrepancy of TMR between the applied magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the plane of the sample may be due to shape-induced anisotropy. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have determined the dependence of exchange coupling on the antiferromagnetic layer thickness (tAF) in FeMn/NiFe bilayers, where the FeMn layer varies from 0.5 to 32 nm, and the NiFe is constant at 30 nm. For tAF〉3 nm, the exchange field Hex varies as (1/tAF)0.3 at both 80 and 300 K, whereas the coercivity is insensitive to tAF. The value of Hex displays a simple angular dependence of cos θ. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A series of Fe/Al2O3/Fe tunneling junction samples were prepared by ion beam sputtering technique. After deposited, the Al layers in a series of samples were exposed to the air for 24–100 h to obtain Al2O3 layers (100 Å) with different oxidation quality. A tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) value of 5.89% was observed in the sample with the Al layer oxidized for 72 h. The I–V curve of this sample shows a nonlinear relationship, indicating the existence of well metal–insulator contact in the sample. The microstructures of these samples were analyzed by using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that good Al2O3 layers are formed in all samples, but there exists an interdiffusion interface between the Fe and Al2O3 (with Al metal inclusions) layer which greatly influences the TMR effect. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thin films of silica aerogel on a silicon wafer have been synthesized via supercritical drying of wet gel films that were obtained by spin coating the polymeric silica sol, followed by aging in an isopropanol (IPA) or tetraethoxysilane/isopropanol (TEOS/IPA) solution. The viscosity of the sol and the spin rate required to form uniform coating layers were optimized. The film thickness and microstructures could be controlled by adjusting the concentration of the sol, the spin rate, and the aging conditions. The porosities and the dielectric constants of the thin films were in the range of 76%–90% (densities of 0.59–0.22 g/cm3) and 2.0–1.5, respectively. The degree of planarization in the aerogel thin film was ∼100%, and the gap-filling capability on a 0.2 μm tungsten patterning wafer was excellent. In particular, aging the wet gel film in the TEOS/IPA solution was very effective in improving the properties of the aerogel films.
