    Description: The Nilgiri Block, southern India represents an exhumed section of lower, late Archean (2500 Ma) crust. The northern highlands of the Nilgiri Block are characterized by metagabbros with pyroxenite inlayers. A two-pyroxene granulite zone acts as a transition between the metagabbros and charnockites, which are exposed in the central and southern part of the Nilgiri highlands. Thermobarometry results indicate a SW–NE regional trend both in temperature (∼650–800°C) and in pressure (700–1100 MPa) over the Nilgiri highlands. In the charnockites, composite rutile–ilmenite grains are the dominant oxide assemblage. In the two-pyroxene granulites, hemo-ilmenite–magnetite is dominant with coexisting rutile–ilmenite composite grains in a few samples in the vicinity of the boundary with the charnockites. In the metagabbros, hemo-ilmenite–magnetite is the dominant oxide assemblage. The principal sulphide mineral in the charnockite is pyrrhotite with minor pyrite–chalcopyrite exsolution lamellae or blebs. In the two-pyroxene granulites and the metagabbros, the principal sulphide assemblage consists of discrete pyrite grains with magnetite rims and pyrite–pyrrhotite–chalcocopyrite associations. From these observations, a specific oxidation trend is seen. The northern granulite-facies metagabbros and two-pyroxene granulites of the Nilgiri highlands are highly oxidized compared with the charnockites from the central and southern regions. This higher oxidation state is proposed to be the result of highly oxidizing agents (probably as SO3) in low H2O activity grain boundary NaCl saline fluids with a dissolved CaSO4 component present during granulite-facies metamorphism of the metagabbros and two-pyroxene granulites. Eventually these agents became more reducing, owing to the inherent buffering of the original tonalite–granodiorite granitoids at the graphite–CO2 buffer, such that S took the form of H2S during the granulite-facies metamorphism of the charnockites. At the same time, these saline fluids were also responsible the solid-state conversion of biotite and amphibole to orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene in the metagabbro, two-pyroxene granulite, and charnockite.

    Description: Systematic changes in whole-rock chemistry, mineralogy, mineral textures, and mineral chemistry are seen along a ca. 95-km traverse of late Archean granitoid orthogneisses in the Shevaroy Block, Eastern Dharwar Craton, southern India. The traverse passes from amphibolite-grade gneisses in the north to granulite-grade rocks (charnockite) in the south. Changes include whole-rock depletion of Rb, Cs, Th, and U in the granulite grade rocks as relative to the amphibolite grade gneisses, and oxidation trends regionally from highly oxidised granulite-facies rocks near the magnetite–haematite buffer to relatively reduced amphibolite-facies rocks below the fayalite-magnetite-quartz. Rare earth elements show limited mobility and are hosted a variety of minerals whose presence is dependent on the metamorphic grade ranging from titanite and allanite in the amphibolite-facies rocks to monazite in the vicinity of the orthopyroxene-in isograd to apatite in the granulite-grade charnockite. Cathodoluminescence and back-scattered electron sub-grain imaging and sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe analysis of zircon from 29 samples of dioritic, tonalitic, and granitic orthogneiss from the traverse reveals magmatic zircon cores that record the emplacement of the granitoid protoliths mostly about 2580 to 2550 Ma, along with a few older mid to late Archean tonalites. Protolith zircon was modified during metamorphism by overgrowth and/or replacement. Relative to igneous cores, U-enriched metamorphic zircon, dominant in the amphibolite-grade gneisses, formed at ca. 2530 Ma, predating retrograde titanite growth at ca. 2500 Ma. Uranium-depleted mantles grew on zircon between 2530 and 2500 Ma in granulite-grade samples south of the orthopyroxene-in isograd. In some of these samples, the U-depleted metamorphic zircon is preceded by mantles of U-undepleted zircon, indicating a progression of metamorphic zircon growth with increasingly depleted compositions between 2530 and 2500 Ma. With increasing metamorphic grade (from amphibolite to granulite) and oxidation state, allanite and monazite disappear from the assemblage and zircon became depleted in U and Th. Whole-rock U-Th compositions became decoupled from relict magmatic zircon compositions, reflecting the development of U-depleted metamorphic zircon and indicating that whole-rock chemical differences along the traverse were produced during metamorphism, rather than just reflecting differences in dioritic vs granitic protoliths. Although in situ anatexis and melt extraction may have played a role, whole-rock and zircon depletion of trace elements can be explained by the action of externally derived, oxidising, low-H2 O activity hypersaline fluids migrating up through the mid to lower crust. Fluids and element migration during metamorphism may be the end result of subduction related processes that cumulated in the collision and concatenation of island arcs and continental blocks. These tectonic processes assembled the Dharwar Craton at the end of the Archean.

    Description: A total of 200 threadfin bream Nemipterus japonicus was collected from Chennai in the east coast and Kochi in the west coast during January to February 2013 and studied for their morphometric and meristic characters. In total, 21 characters were analyzed out of which 3 characters namely dorsal, ventral and anal fins were not considered since they were unaltered. The findings indicate that 91% of the total variation in the data can be accounted for by three clusters. Small values of 1-R**2 ratio for the three clusters obtained indicate good clustering. The small values of p (≤0.0001) indicate that there are significant differences in the variables of Chennai and Kochi data which are shown through MANOVA. This might depict that the fish of Chennai and Kochi might be of 2 different stocks. Moreover, the study has also aided in identifying the importance of regular monitoring of stock assessment and the biology of commercially important fishes.

    Description: Red hind (Epinephelus guttatus) have been overfished in the Caribbean and were included with seven other regional grouper species deemed vulnerable to risk of extinction. The Puerto Rico Department of Natural and EnvironmentalResources desired to map spawning red hind aggregations within commonwealth waters as part of their resource management program for the species. Mobile hydroacoustic surveys were conducted over 3-day periods in 2002 and 2003,indexed to the full moon phase in February or March when red hind were known to aggregate. Four vessels concurrentlysampled the southwest, south, and southeast coasts of Puerto Rico in 2002. In 2003, three vessels conducted complementary surveys of the northwest, north, and northeast coasts of the island, completing a circuit of the coastal shelf-spawning habitat. These surveys indicated that red hind spawning aggregations were prevalent along the south and west coasts, and sparse along the north coast during the survey periods. Highest spawning red hindconcentrations were observed in three areas offshore of the west coast of Puerto Rico, around Mona and Desecheo islands(20,443 and 10,559 fish/km2, respectively) and in the Bajo de Cico seasonal closed area (4,544 fish/km2). Following both 2002 and 2003 surveys, a series of controlledacoustic measurements of known local fish species in net pens were conducted to assess the mean target strength(acoustic backscatter) of each group. Ten species of fish were measured, including red hind (E. guttatus), coney (E. fulvus), white grunt (Haemulon plumieri), pluma (Calamus pennatula), blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus), squirrel fish (Holocentrus spp.), black durgeon (Melichtyhs niger), ocean file fish (Canthidermis sufflamen), ocean surgeon fish (Acanthurus bahianus), and butter grouper (Mycteroperca spp.). In general, the mean target strength results from the caged fish experiments were in agreement with published target strength length relationships, with the exception ofwhite grunt and pluma.

    Description: Sand sole, Psettichthys melanostictus, is a small but important part of the west coast groundfish fishery. It hasnever been assessed and there is a limited amount of biological data for the species. We provide the first estimates of age and growth for California populations and compare them with studies from other areas. We found that sand sole is a rapidly growing species which may show a strong latitudinal gradient in growth rate. We also found evidence of a recent, strong cohortrelated shift in the sex ratio of the population towards fewer females. In additionwe examined data from the Washington, Oregon, and California commercial fishery to make an initial determination of population status. We found that catch per unit of effort in commercial trawls experienced a decline over time but has rebounded in recent years, except central California (the southern part of its commercial range),where the decline has not reversed.
