Notes: Abstract Laser heating of semi-infinite solid substance is introduced and analytical solution appropriate to the laser machining power intensities is obtained. Both conduction limited and non-conduction limited cases are considered. The limiting cases in non-conduction limited equation are investigated and the equation governing the conduction limited heating is deduced. In the case of non-conduction limited heating process, the location of maximum temperature and its functional relation with the substance and laser properties are developed. Steady state analysis of the heating process is taken into account and limiting laser power intensity is concluded. In addition, the applicability of Fourier heat conduction equation in laser heating is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Laser surface pulse heating of engineering metals is in demand in the metal industry and investigation into laser pulse heating becomes fruitful in this regard. Application of Fourier theory to heat conduction due to high power laser irradiation may give closed form solution to the problem. On the other hand, the heat flux through a given plane depends on the electron energy distribution through the material and at the scale of distance required to examine the problem, the material can no longer be considered as being homogeneous continuum, therefore, errors may occur when considering the Fourier theory in laser heating process. The problem requires to be examined in the quantum field. The present study examines the pulse laser heating process when considering both Fourier conduction and electron-kinetic theory approaches. Analytical solution to Fourier conduction equation is obtained for intensity exponential pulses while numerical scheme is introduced to solve the heat transfer equation resulted from kinetic theory approach. It is found that both Fourier and electron kinetic theory approaches result in similar temperature profiles for the pulses having the same energy content. In the case of electron kinetic theory approach the rise time for surface temperature to reach the melting point is shorter than that obtained from the analytical solution.

Notes: Abstract Partial and total loss of function mutant alleles of a putative Drosophila homologue (DPhK-γ) of the vertebrate phosphorylase kinase γ-subunit gene have been isolated. DPhK-γ is required in early embryonic processes, such as gastrulation and mesoderm formation; however, defects in these processes are seen only when both the maternal and zygotic components of DPhK-γ expression are eliminated. Loss of zygotic expression alone does not appear to affect normal embryonic and larval development; some pupal lethality is observed but the majority of mutant animals eclose as adults. Many of these adults show defects in their leg musculature (e.g. missing and degenerating muscles), in addition to exhibiting melanised “tumours” on their leg joints. Loss of only the maternal component has no obvious phenotypic consequences. The DPhKγ gene has been cloned and sequenced. It has an open reading frame (ORF) of 1680 by encoding a 560 amino acid protein. The predicted amino acid sequence of DPhK-γ has two conserved domains, the catalytic kinase and calmodulin-binding domains, separated by a linker sequence. The amino acid sequence of DPhK-γ is homologous to that of mammalian PhK-γ proteins but differs in the length and amino acid composition of its linker sequence. The expression of DPhK-γ mRNA is developmentally regulated. We discuss the implications of these observations.
