Notes: One of the hallmark pathologic characteristics of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related disorders is deposition of the 39–42 amino acid amyloid β-protein (Aβ) in the walls of cerebral blood vessels. The cerebrovascular Aβ deposits in these disorders are associated with degenerating smooth muscle cells in the vessel wall which have been implicated in the expression of the amyloid β-protein precursor (AβPP) and formation of Aβ. We have established primary cultures of human cerebrovascular smooth muscle cells as a model for investigating the cellular pathologic processes involved in the cerebral amyloid angiopathy of AD and related disorders. Recently, we have shown that Aβ1-42, the predominant pathologic cerebrovascular form of Aβ, causes extensive cellular degeneration that is accompanied by a striking increase in the levels of cellular AβPP, potentially amyloidogenic carboxyl terminal AβPP fragments, and soluble Aβ peptide in the cultured human cerebrovascular smooth muscle cells. Together, these studies provide evidence that Aβ contributes to the onset and progression of the cerebrovascular pathology associated with AD and related disorders and suggests the mechanism involves a molecular cascade with a novel product-precursor relationship that results in the adverse production and accumulation of Aβ.

Notes: Abstract  Echiuran worms collected by the Spanish BENTART (=Bentos Antártico) cruises during years 1994 and 1995 to the South Shetland Islands from depths ranging from 24 to 1019 m are recorded. Three species are recognized: Alomasoma belyaevi, Echiurus antarcticus and Prashadus sp., with the presence of Prashadus sp. confirmed in the Antarctic. Distribution maps and a checklist of the echiuran species south of the Antarctic Convergence with depths and bibliographic references are included.

Notes: Summary Rye (Secale cereale L.) α-amylase isozymes are controlled by at least four loci located on the 5R (three) and 7R (one) chromosomes. In the case of ‘Imperial’ and ‘King II’ cultivars, two of the three 5R chromosome loci could be specifically located on the 5Rl chromosome arm; the other one was located on the 5RS. The locus of 7R chromosome was located on the 7RL chromosome arm of ‘Imperial’ rye.

Notes: Abstract A methodology for the quick, overall assessment of the capability of different parts of a coastal environment to be used for human activities is described. The methodology is based on the elaboration of a series of thematic maps (geologic, biologic, and dynamic, e.g., currents, features) for the three “environmental systems” that were defined (marine, estuarine, and emerged coastline). The thematic maps are combined to define “homogeneous units” and these are then evaluated for the attractiveness and impact corresponding to a series of selected activities. Alternatively, the mapped features can be evaluated directly for certain systems, without defining homogeneous units. The combination of attractiveness and impact is used to obtain the relative capability of each unit for each activity, thus establishing the activities that are most advisable in each case.

Notes: Abstract The historical development of a process of reclamation of intertidal areas in an estuary has been quantitatively studied by means of old engravings, maps, navagation charts, and aerial photographs. These show that about 83 percent of the natural coastline of the estuary has disappeared, nearly two-thirds of its intertidal area has been covered, and over 40 percent of its volume has been lost. The rate of this artificial process is several tens of times faster than that of the natural sedimentation. Extrapolation of the observed trends shows that, if these continue, the intertidal areas would disappear completely in 31 to 105 years. Theoretical calculations based on comparisons with other estuaries show that the accumulated loss in the productivity of living matter (in the form of primary producers), since the process started about 140 years ago, could reach 1.5·1010 kg. This could represent, considering several possible food chains, the equivalent of the food necessary to sustain several thousand people for life. An economic analysis of the impact of the process has been made by considering, first, the decrease in fish and shellfish catches in the bay (using historical data and data about present clam productivity) and the decrease in its aesthetic quality and recreational potential. These were determined by means of interviews with the population to obtain a “demand curve” for the willingness to pay for the preservation and use of the bay. Second, the price of the man-made land obtained was considered. The data obtained show that the economic losses would offset the benefits within 10 to 30 years.

Notes: Abstract In order to assess the effects of the execution of the ‘Port of Bilbao Enlargement Project’, epifauna living on hard substrata and environmental parameters were quantitatively investigated from 1994 to 1996. A programme of repeated non-destructive sampling at 8 stations was carried out during the construction period of a breakwater and the filling operations on the shoreline. A correlation analysis was used as a method to extract potential indicator species of particular environmental conditions measured in the field. We postulate that the remaining species (about 80% of the total species data set), insensitive to any of the investigated environmental factors, were unnecessary for the purposes of assessing the environmental impact caused by the port building works. Classification and ordination techniques were then conducted at two contrasting levels by using the full species data set and the selected faunal indicator data subset. All plots showed separation of sampling sites in 3 major groups, which were easily related to the perturbations caused by a siltation gradient from the estuary mouth. This suggests that the amount of effort required in the enumeration of all the organisms sampled may be dramatically reduced by identifying only faunal indicators of environmental discontinuities in the field. So far, the engineering works developed on the western side of the bay have not caused dramatic temporal changes in species composition, or at least they have not had an effect that was larger than the variations detected among the study sites due to siltation from the estuary mouth.

Notes: Abstract Sipunculans collected during the EPOS (“European Polarstern Study”) leg 3 cruise (13.1.89–10.3.89) to the Weddell Sea shelf area from depths ranging from 186 to 2037 m are recorded. Seven species in three genera are recognized; Nephasoma capilleforme and Phascolion convestitum have not been recorded hitherto in Antarctica. Significant morphological characters as shown by light (LM) and electron (SEM) photographs are described and illustrated. Antarctic distribution maps of the species collected and a checklist of the sipunculan species south of the Antarctic Convergence with depths and bibliographic references are included.
