    Topics: Biology
Notes: Abstract From cell cultures of Haplopappus gracilis, an enzyme, catalyzing the glucosylation of cyanidin at the 3 position using uridine diphosphate-D-glucose (UDPG) as glucosyl-donor, has been isolated and purified 50-fold. The enzyme was not specific for cyanidin alone, but also glucosylated other anthocyanidins and flavonols in position 3. However, apigenin, luteolin, naringenin and dihydroquercetin were not glucosylated. The reaction has an optimum pH of approximately 8, and the apparent K m values for UDPG and cyanidin were 0.5 and 0.33 mM respectively. The enzyme reaction is strongly inhibited by cyanidin (above 0.25 mM).

Notes: Abstract Eight flavonol glycosides were detected in the three species of theFagonia sinaica complex. They were fully characterized as the 3-glucosides of kaempferol, quercetin and isorhamnetin, 3-rutinoside of quercetin and 3,7-diglucoside of quercetin and isorhamnetin. Two additional glycosides were partially characterized as a kaempferol 3,7-diglycoside and quercetin 3-diglycoside.

Notes: Summary Mangifera indica, family Anacardiaceae, was first quantitatively estimated in order to evaluate it as a potential source for tannins in local plants; tannins ranged from 9.2 to about 14%, the highest percent was found in the leaves of variety mabrouka (12.1) and bark of haram 3 (13.61), while the leaves of variety pyri and bark of taimour contained the least amount of tannins (9.27% and 9.34% respectively), thus indicating that some varieties might be quite good sources for tannins. The qualitative tannin analysis indicated that the tannins ofMangifera indica are more or less of the condensed type. The flavonoid test (Shinoda's test) indicates that all the samples contain flavonoid nuclei. The presence of sugars was indicated by the anthrone reagent, and separated and identified by paper chromatography. The quantitative estimation of mangiferin was carried out in all ten samples, and in contradistinction to the leaves the bark materials proved to contain higher amounts than the leaves, especially variety hindi sinnara which contained as much as 11.8% mangiferin.

Notes: Summary The deseeded pods, seeds, bark and wood ofAcacia nilotica, proved to contain 34.95%, 6.61%, 27.11% and 6.35% tannins respectively, belonging mainly to the condensed type. The sugar components of the different parts of the plant were separated and identified. For the evaluation ofAcacia nilotica bark, in comparison with mimosa bark extract, as a potential source for tannins, tanning experiments were carried out using both materials on goatskins.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Arbeit ist die Fortsetzung der IV.
Notes: Abstract In continuation of part IV, this part deals with the colour tests, free sugars and phenolic aglycones of 28 plants (Lauraceae toMeliaceae). A detailed discussion of each plant is given, dealing with the results obtained by us and those given in literature.
