Notizen: Achieves efficient structural optimization of plate structures while the design constraints are multiple frequency constraints. Reduces the computational cost of optimization by approximating the frequencies using the Rayleigh quotient. Uses an optimality criteria method to solve each of the approximate problems. The creation of a high quality approximation is the key to the efficiency of the method. Also, with the great number of design variables, the optimality criteria methods are robust approaches. Thus the combination of approximation concepts and optimality criteria methods forms the basis of an efficient tool for optimum design of plate structures with frequency constraints. Presents examples and compares the results with previous work.

Notizen: Abstract Efficient optimum design of plate structures is achieved with stress, displacement and frequency constraints. To reduce the computational cost of optimum design, attempts have been made to reduce the number of static and dynamic analyses required in the process. To achieve this goal, all the quantities that are the output of analysis are approximated. By substituting these approximate functions into the original design problem, an approximate problem is obtained which can be solved by numerical optimization techniques efficiently. This is one cycle which does not require the analysis of the structure. The resulting solution is used as a starting design point for the next iteration. This process is repeated until the problem converges. The efficiency of the method is based on the creation of high quality approximation of the functions under consideration and thus reducing the number of iterations. A three-point approximation is developed to approximate the forces and the Rayleigh quotient. Numerical examples are offered and the results are compared with previous published work.

Notizen: Abstract The objective here is to present a method for optimizing truss structures with discrete design variables. The design variables are considered to be sizing variables as well as coordinates of joints. Both types of variables can be discrete simultaneously. Mixed continuous-discrete variables can also be considered. To increase the efficiency of the method, the structural responses, such as forces and displacements are approximated in each design cycle. The approximation of responses is carried out with respect to the design variables or their reciprocals. By substituting these approximate functions of the responses into the original design problem, an explicit high quality approximation is achieved, the solution of which does not require the detailed finite element analysis of the structure in each sub-optimization iteration. First it is assumed that all the design variables are continuous and a continuous variable optimization is performed. With the results of this step, the branch and bound method is employed on the same approximate problem to achieve a discrete solution. The numerical results indicate that the method is efficient and robust in terms of the required number of structural analyses. Several examples are presented to show the efficiency of the method.

Notizen: The purpose of this work is to present an efficient method for optimum design of frame structures, using approximation concepts. A dual strategy in which the design variables can be considered as discrete variables is used. A two-level approximation concept is used. In the first level, all the structural response quantities such as forces and displacements are approximated as functions of some intermediate variables. Then the second level approximation is employed to convert the first-level approximation problem into a series of problems of separable forms, which can be solved easily by dual methods with discrete variables. In the second-level approximation, the objective function and the approximate constraints are linearized. The objective of the first-level approximation is to reduce the number of structural analyses required in the optimization problem and the second level approximation reduces the computational cost of the optimization technique. A portal frame and a single layer grid are used as design examples to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.
