Notes: The structure of molten mixtures of (KX)y(AlX3)1−y was investigated by neutron diffraction for X=Cl and Br and y=0.25 and 0.33. These melts, known as acidic haloaluminates, contain different ionic species such as AlX−4,Al2X−7, Al3X−10. The diffraction patterns were similar, although not identical, for the same halide pairs and showed features indicative of short-range and intermediate-range order. Quantum chemical calculations were carried out on AlX−4, Al2X−7, and Al3X−10 to provide information needed to interpret the structural results within the framework of the random packing of structural units model. It is shown that the bent Al–X–Al bridge for Al2X−7, obtained from the quantum chemical calculations, is necessary to represent well the structure, and that the values of the bond angles at the central halide atoms are around 110°. Aluminum atoms are found to be tetrahedrally coordinated by the halide atoms, and information on the orientational correlations of neighboring Al2X−7 is derived.

Notes: We have applied two synchrotron powder diffraction techniques to the measurement of high quality anomalous scattering diffraction data for amorphous materials. One of these methods, which uses a curved perfect crystal analyzer to simultaneously diffract multiple powder lines into a position sensitive detector has been shown to possess high resolution, low background, and very high counting rates. This data measurement technique provides excellent energy resolution while minimizing systematic errors resulting from detector nonlinearity. Anomalous scattering data for a Cesium Germanate glass collected using this technique will be presented. The second powder diffraction technique uses a flat analyzer crystal to deflect multiple diffraction lines out of the equatorial plane. Calculations show that this method possesses sufficient energy resolution for anomalous scattering experiments when a perfect crystal analyzer is used and is experimentally much simpler. Future studies will make use of a rapid sample changer allowing the scattering from the sample and a standard material (a material not containing the anomalous scatterer) to be measured alternately at each angle, reducing systematic errors due to beam instability or sample misalignment. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We compare the large magnetoresistive response of slightly nonstoichiometric Ag2±δTe for a wide range of hole (p≤8×1017 cm−3) and electron (n≤4×1018 cm−3) carrier densities. In the p-type material alone, a characteristic peak in the resistivity ρ(T,H) is dramatically enhanced and moves to higher temperature with increasing magnetic field, resulting in a high field (H∼5 T) magnetoresistance that is sizeable even at room temperature. By contrast, n-type specimens are geared for low-field (H〈0.1 T) applications because of a striking linear field dependence of the magnetoresistance that appears to be restricted to the Ag-rich materials. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The x-ray structure factor of water measured under ambient conditions with synchrotron radiation is compared with those predicted on the basis of partial structure factors describing the nuclear positions obtained by neutron diffraction and of different assumptions for the electron distribution. The comparison indicates that a charge of approximately 0.5 e is transferred from each hydrogen atom to the oxygen on the same molecule, implying an effective dipole moment of 2.9 D, in good agreement with theoretical estimates. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structure of polyethylene oxide (PEO) was investigated by neutron scattering in both semicrystalline and liquid states. Deuterated samples were studied in addition to the protonated ones in order to avoid the large incoherent scattering of hydrogen and identify features in the pair correlation functions attributable to C–H pairs. Analysis of the deuterated sample gave additional information on the C–O and C–C pairs. The results are compared with molecular-dynamics simulations of liquid PEO. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To determine the partial structure associated with a particular element in a multicomponent system, contrast variation is proposed based on the use of modulated anomalous X-ray scattering (MAXS). The photon energy of the X-ray beam incident on the sample is modulated over a range of energies below an absorption edge of the selected element. Because of anomalous dispersion, measurement of the scattered-intensity gradient with respect to the energy gives the required information. MAXS can be used in both small-angle and wide-angle diffraction and is applicable, in principle, to crystalline, amorphous and liquid materials. Energy modulation obtained by oscillating the Bragg angle of the monochromator by a small amount, followed by phase-sensitive detection, leads to a significant reduction of both systematic and statistical errors. Results of a simulation study of MAXS from an aqueous solution of NiCl2 under extreme conditions of dilution and scattering contrast are presented.
