Notizen: The oscillations of an axially symmetric liquid drop in an acoustic standing wave field in air have been studied using the boundary integral method. The interaction between the drop oscillation and sound field has been included in this analysis. Our computations focus on the frequency shift of small-amplitude oscillations of an acoustically deformed drop typical of a drop levitated in air. In the presence or absence of gravity, the trend and the magnitude of the frequency shift have been given in terms of drop size, drop deformation, and the strength of the sound field. Our calculations are compared with experiments performed on the United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) and with ground-based measurements, and are found to be in good agreement within the accuracy of the experimental data. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report the identification and characterization of the ste (Streptomyceseps) gene cluster of Streptomyces sp. 139 required for exopolysaccharide (EPS) biosynthesis. This report is the first genetic work on polysaccharide production in Streptomyces. To investigate the gene cluster involved in exopolysaccharide 139A biosynthesis, degenerate primers were designed to polymerase chain reaction amplify an internal fragment of the priming glycosyltransferase gene that catalyzes the first step in exopolysaccharide biosynthesis. Screening of a genomic library of Streptomyces sp. 139 with this polymerase chain reaction product as probe allowed the isolation of a ste gene cluster containing 22 open reading frames similar to polysaccharide biosynthesis genes of other bacterial species. Involvement of the ste gene cluster in exopolysaccharide biosynthesis was confirmed by disrupting the priming glycosyltransferase gene in Streptomyces sp. 139 to generate non-exopolysaccharide-producing mutants.

Notizen: Molluscan shell possesses excellent strength, stiffness and fracture toughness that areclosely related to its exquisite microstructure. SEM observation of a clam’ shell showed that theshell is a kind of bioceramic composite consisting of aragonite and protein layers parallel with thesurface of the shell. The observation also showed that the aragonite layers are composed of long andthin aragonite sheets. Many aragonite sheets are of curving shape at the center of the shell. Thehigher fracture toughness of the shell was analyzed based on the representative model of thecurving aragonite sheets and the concept of the maximum pullout force that is related to the fracturetoughness of the shell. The analytical result showed that the maximum pullout force of the curvingaragonite sheet is larger than that of straight aragonite sheets, which may effectively enhance thefracture toughness of the shell

Notizen: This paper proposes a backlight system that generates the regular dot pattern on thebottom of light guide to achieve uniform luminance. The simulation program employs the variabler-cut technique combined with some regular dot pattern such as shift-rectangular, hexagonal and soon. The r-cut technique based on molecular-dynamic method, was first bought up to apply in therandom dot pattern. By using such a technology, we could easily evaluate the right range of radiuswithin each cell to get the general dot distribution according to the specific position away from lightsources and the sources properties, after we divided the total effective domain into several sectionsof cells. In the end we made some fine-tuning on the boundaries to obtain the final result. It hasbeen revealed in the simulation that the light guide can achieve a uniformity of more than 90% andoptical efficiency about 26%. What we have more interest in are the optical properties that havemuch influence on both the uniformity and the optical efficiency. Particularly when it comes tolarger size backlight products used in PC screen for instance, it will have a great impact. Severalfigures in this paper also illustrate the dots distribution and the illuminance distribution

Notizen: At present, the large backlight modules, used in illuminating advertising pictures, aredesigned and developed in various specifications, whose common goal is to try to manufacturethinner backlight modules and produce more uniform illumination. The currently well developedbacklighting technology for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) can be transformed and used in such anarea. However, the design of edge-lit backlight with size of over 1 square meter has greatdifficulties in eliminating the phenomenon of non-uniform illumination. In this paper, theapplication of Bezier curve in the simulating the dot pattern on the bottom of light guide ispresented, which directly determines the final light extraction efficiency and illuminatinguniformity. Taking the RMS deviation of illuminance values at several sample positions as themerit function, the shape of Bezier curves can be smoothly changed, so that the dot radius can beoptimized in a fast and efficient way. Such an optimization procedure uses only two variables andhas a fast convergence. As an example, a large light guide, 800mm×1000mm in size, was designedby applying the Bezier method, and the final uniformity of 70% was achieved. The most prominentfeature in such a method is that the thickness of designed light guide can decrease to 5 mm. In sum,the large sized edge-lit backlight can be designed in a short optimization period by simulating thedot radius distribution in a shape of the Bezier curve

Notizen: Bone possesses excellent mechanical properties, which are closely related to its favorablemicrostructures optimized by nature through many centuries. In this work, a scanning electronmicroscope (SEM) was used to observe the microstructures of a cannon bone. It showed that thebone is a kind of bioceramic composite consisting of hydroxyapatite layers and collagen proteinmatrix. The hydroxyapatite layers are composed of long and thin hydroxyapatite sheets. Thehydroxyapatite sheets in different hydroxyapatite layers distribute along different orientations, which composes a kind of cross microstructure. The maximum pullout force of the crossmicrostructure was investigated and compared with that of the 0° microstructure with theirrepresentative models. The result indicated that the maximum pullout force of the crossmicrostructure is markedly larger than that of the 0° microstructure

Notizen: Bone is a kind of biomaterial in nature. It behaves favorable strength, stiffness and fracture toughness which are closely related to its fine microstructures. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation on a shinbone shows that the bone is a kind of natural bioceramic composite consisting of hydroxyapatite layers and collagen matrix. The hydroxyapatite layers are arranged in a parallel distribution and consist of many hydroxyapatite sheets. The fracture toughness of the bone was analyzed based on the representative model of the microstructure in the bone and the idea of maximum pullout energy. The analytical result shows that the long and thin shape as well as the parallel distribution of the hydroxyapatite sheets increase the maximum pullout energy of the sheets and enhance the fracture toughness of the bone

Notizen: Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation shows that Solid-trough shell is a kind of bioceramic composite consisting of laminated aragonite and organic materials. The aragonite layers are parallel with the surface of the shell and consist of numerous thin and long aragonite fibers. The aragonite fibers in an arbitrary aragonite layers possess different directions and compose a kind of screwy microstructure. The maximum pullout force of the screwy microstructure was investigated and compared with that of parallel microstructure based on their representative models. It shows that the maximum pullout force of the screwy microstructure is markedly larger than that of the parallel microstructure, which was experimentally validated

Beschreibung: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are diseases of abnormal hematopoietic differentiation with aberrant epigenetic alterations. Azacitidine (AZA) is a DNA methyltransferase inhibitor widely used to treat MDS and AML, yet the impact of AZA on the cell-surface proteome has not been defined. To identify potential therapeutic targets for use in combination with AZA in AML patients, we investigated the effects of AZA treatment on four AML cell lines representing different stages of differentiation. The effect of AZA treatment on these cell lines was characterized at three levels: the DNA methylome, the transcriptome, and the cell-surface proteome. Untreated AML cell lines showed substantial overlap at all three omics levels; however, while AZA treatment globally reduced DNA methylation in all cell lines, changes in the transcriptome and surface proteome were subtle and differed among the cell lines. Transcriptome analysis identified five commonly up-regulated coding genes upon AZA treatment in all four cell lines, TRPM4 being the only gene encoding a surface protein, and surface proteome analysis found no commonly regulated proteins. Gene set enrichment analysis of differentially regulated RNA and surface proteins showed a decrease in metabolic pathways and an increase in immune defense response pathways. As such, AZA treatment led to diverse effects at the individual gene and protein levels but converged to common responses at the pathway level. Given the heterogeneous responses in the four cell lines, we discuss potential therapeutic strategies for AML in combination with AZA.
