Notes: Several crack tip stress intensity factor solutions have been published for semi-elliptic, surface breaking cracks in plates subjected to tension or bending forces. These solutions do not agree with each other particularly well and the basis for choosing which one is the best has not been established. In this paper, the development of fatigue crack shape is used as a diagnostic tool to test the accuracy of these theoretical stress intensity solutions in predictive fatigue crack growth calculations. Those solutions giving the best engineering estimate of crack tip stress intensity factors are identified. Single equations are also given for each loading case at the deepest point or surface intersection point of semi-elliptic cracks in order to facilitate calculations on programmable calculators. A rational basis for calculating the progress of a crack which snaps through the thickness and continues to propagate in a stable way by fatigue is suggested.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-eight Canadian isolates of Fusarium were tested for their ability to produce moniliformin in corn. Both F. moniliforme (2/6 isolates) and F. subglutinans (11/15 isolates) produced the mycotoxin, while F. graminearum did not. Field-corn inoculated with F. moniliforme M3783 was able to support production of both moniliformin and fusarin C.

Notes: Abstract The predominant fungi present in samples of reject and retail red kidney beans were Aspergillus glaucus, Penicillium spp. and Alternaria spp. Together with A. ochraceus, A. flavus, Fusarium spp., and Trichoderma, these isolates from the reject beans were screened for numerous mycotoxins by TLC. The most consistently produced mycotoxins were penicillic acid (from A. ochraceus and Penicillium spp.) and Alternaria toxins (tenuazonic acid and alternariol). A. glaucus strains were tested for cytotoxicity in three tissue culture cell lines with positive results.

Notes: Abstract A survey of 38 samples of Canadian overwintered grains showed that 14 (37 %) contained viableFusarium. Of a total of 38Fusarium isolates, cultured on autoclaved corn, 20 (from 7 grain samples) showed toxicity to brine shrimp larvae and 12 (from 5 samples) produced levels of trichothecenes detectable by thin layer chromatography. The principal trichothecene found was T-2 toxin, produced by 10 strains and accompanied in half of these by neosolaniol; some of these strains were identified asF. sporotrichioides Sherbakoff. Two strains ofF. poae (Peck) Wollenw. formed small amounts of diacetoxyscirpenol. T-2 toxin was the most toxic of 8 trichothecenes tested on brine shrimp larvae; the wide range of toxicities limits the usefulness of this bioassay as a general screening method for trichothecenes.

Notes: Abstract The wetting and bonding behaviour between diamond plaques and copper alloyed with chromium, titanium or vanadium has been studied using the sessile drop technique. Wetting was induced at 1150° C by additions of more than 0.1 at. % of titanium, but additions of vanadium up to and beyond the solubility limit did not cause wetting to occur. The room temperature strengths of the interfaces between the diamond plaques and the solidified sessile drops increased with increasing alloying element concentration, reached a maximum value at a concentration less than that needed to induce wetting, and thereafter decreased. The maximum strengths achieved by alloying with chromium, titanium or vanadium were 35.5, 42.0 and 69.8 kg mm−2 respectively. The reactivity of the alloyed sessile drops was assessed using metallography, EPMA and a surface contour device. A tentative picture of the effects of diamond-metal interactions on wetting and bonding behaviour was developed.

Notes: Abstract The bonding achieved by vacuum hot-pressing cylinders of copper, nickel and a few of their alloys against diamond plaques has been measured. Alloying with carbide-forming elements such as titanium can have a markedly beneficial effect on the bonding of copper and, to a lesser extent, of nickel. The strengths obtained also depended on the fabrication time and temperature, at first increasing and then decreasing with time. These phenomena are compared to those observed previously in a study of bonding between diamonds and molten copper alloys. Some evidence is presented that relates the phenomena to the abrasiveness of diamond grit compacts.
