Abstract The friction and wear of synthetic diamond with and without N+ implantation and CVD diamond coatings were studied in air, water and methanol. It was shown that water effectively reduced the friction of the synthetic diamond and CVD diamond at lighter loads, but methanol did not. Wear of the diamond was minimal in methanol. N+ ion implantation was less effective at reducing the friction.
