    Description: The electrooptic effect in ZnTe has recently attracted research attention, and various device structures using ZnTe have been explored. For application to practical terahertz wave detector devices based on ZnTe thin films, sapphire substrates are preferred because they enable the optical path alignment to be simplified. ZnTe/sapphire heterostructures were focused upon, and ZnTe epilayers were prepared on highly mismatched sapphire substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Epitaxial relationships between the ZnTe thin films and the sapphire substrates with their various orientations were investigated using an X-ray diffraction pole figure method. (0001) c -plane, (1-102) r -plane, (1-100) m -plane, and (11-20) a -plane oriented sapphire substrates were used in this study. The epitaxial relationship between ZnTe and c -plane sapphire was found to be (111) ZnTe//(0001) sapphire with an in-plane orientation relationship of [−211] ZnTe//[1-100] sapphire. It was found that the (211)-plane ZnTe layer was grown on the m -plane of the sapphire substrates, and the (100)-plane ZnTe layer was grown on the r -plane sapphire. When the sapphire substrates were inclined from the c -plane towards the m -axis direction, the orientation of the ZnTe thin films was then tilted from the (111)-plane to the (211)-plane. The c -plane of the sapphire substrates governs the formation of the (111) ZnTe domain and the ZnTe epilayer orientation. These crystallographic features were also related to the atom arrangements of ZnTe and sapphire.

    Description: In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Ras regulates adenylate cyclase, which is essential for progression through the G1 phase of the cell cycle. However, even when the adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) pathway was bypassed, the double disruption of RAS1 and RAS2 resulted in defects in growth at both low and high temperatures. Furthermore, the simultaneous disruption of RAS1, RAS2, and the RAS-related gene RSR1 was lethal at any temperature. The triple-disrupted cells were arrested late in the mitotic (M) phase, which was accompanied by an accumulation of cells with divided chromosomes and sustained histone H1 kinase activity. The lethality of the triple disruption was suppressed by the multicopies of CDC5, CDC15, DBF2, SPO12, and TEM1, all of which function in the completion of the M phase. Mammalian ras also suppressed the lethality, which suggests that a similar signaling pathway exists in higher eukaryotes.     Description: Serpentinites are rocks consisting mostly of the serpentine-group minerals chrysotile, lizardite and antigorite. They are formed by the hydration of olivine-rich ultramafic rocks and they contain up to ~13 wt% H 2 O. They have long been used by many cultures as building and carving stones. Serp entinites play essential roles in numerous geological settings. They act as a lubricant along plate boundaries during aseismic creep and contribute to the geochemical cycle of subduction zones. In the mantle, they are a reservoir of water and fluid-mobile elements. Serpentinites can produce nickel ore where weathered, and they can sequester CO 2 where carbonated. They may have provided an environment for the abiotic generation of amino acids on the early Earth and other planets, potentially leading to the development of life.

    Description: Sex-determining genes have been successively isolated in several teleosts. In Odontesthes hatcheri and O. bonariensis, the amhy gene has been identified as a master sex-determining gene. However, whether this gene is conserved along related species is still unknown. In this study, the presence of amhy and its association with phenotypic sex was analyzed in 10 species of Odontesthes genus. The primer sets from O. hatcheri that amplify both amhs successfully generated fragments that correspond to amha and amhy in all species. The full sequences of amhy and amha isolated for four key species revealed higher identity values among presumptive amhy, including the 0.5 Kbp insertion in the third intron and amhy-specific insertions/deletions. Amha was present in all specimens, regardless of species and sex, whereas amhy was amplified in most but not all phenotypic males. Complete association between amhy-homologue with maleness was found in O. argentinensis, O. incisa, O. mauleanum, O. perugiae, O. piquava, O. regia, and O. smitti, whereas O. humensis, O. mirinensis, and O. nigricans showed varied degrees of phenotypic/genotypic sex mismatch. The conservation of amhy gene in Odontesthes provide an interesting framework to study the evolution and the ecological interactions of genotypic and environmental sex determination in this group.

    Notes: Photothermal technique is studied for nondestructive imaging of irregularity in a platelike sample partially clamped circumferentially. By using a flexural resonance of the sample itself, the sensitivity for obtaining the image has been improved. The excitation efficiency for the resonant vibration at different positions of the heating laser beam is dependent on the resonance mode as well as the clamp condition.

    Notes: B–C–N–H thin films were deposited by plasma chemical-vapor deposition with an external capacitively coupled reactor at an rf frequency of 13.56 MHz. The films were formed from a gas mixture of B2H6 (5.25 vol % in N2), methane, and argon or nitrogen as carrier gases. The deposition was carried out at room temperature and without heating the substrate. The films were transparent in the range of 10 000–2000-A(ring) wavelengths. The Knoop microhardnesses were 1825–3324 kg/mm2 and the refractive index was 1.3–1.6. An extensive discussion of the effect of the deposition conditions on both microhardness and film composition is given. In addition, the interrelation between the microhardness and composition is illustrated.
