    Description: We present the results of a new analysis of the X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) population residing in and behind 135 of the most massive galaxy clusters in the redshift range of 0.2 〈  z  〈 0.9 observed with Chandra . With a sample of more than 11 000 X-ray point sources, we are able to measure, for the first time, evidence for evolution in the cluster AGN population beyond the expected evolution of field AGN. Our analysis shows that overall number density of cluster AGN scales with the cluster mass as ~ M 500 – 1.2 . There is no evidence for the overall number density of cluster member X-ray AGN depending on the cluster redshift in a manner different than field AGN, nor is there any evidence that the spatial distribution of cluster AGN (given in units of the cluster overdensity radius r 500 ) strongly depends on the cluster mass or redshift. The M –1.2 ± 0.7 scaling relation we measure is consistent with theoretical predictions of the galaxy merger rate in clusters, which is expected to scale with the cluster velocity dispersion, , as ~ –3 or ~ M –1 . This consistency suggests that galaxy mergers may be an important contributor to the cluster AGN population, a result that is further corroborated by visual inspection of Hubble images for 23 spectroscopically confirmed cluster member AGN in our sample. A merger-driven scenario for the triggering of X-ray AGN is not strongly favoured by studies of field galaxies, however, suggesting that different mechanisms may be primarily responsible for the triggering of cluster and field X-ray AGN.

    Description: X-ray spectra from cores of galaxy clusters can be strongly distorted by resonant scattering of line photons, affecting metal abundance and gas velocity measurements. We introduce simulated spectral models that take into account the resonant scattering effect, radial variations of thermodynamic properties of the hot gas, projection effects and small-scale isotropic gas motions. The key feature of the models is that all these effects are treated self-consistently for the whole spectrum, rather than for individual lines. The model spectra are publicly available and can be used for direct comparison with observed projected spectra. Comparison with the existing XMM–Newton and Chandra data of the Perseus Cluster shows that even though there is no strong evidence for the resonant scattering in Perseus, the low energy resolution of the X-ray CCDs is not sufficient to robustly distinguish spectral distortions due to the resonant scattering, different metal abundance profiles and different levels of gas turbulence. Future Astro-H data will resolve most of the problems we are facing with CCDs. With the help of our models, the resonant scattering analysis can be done self-consistently using the whole spectral information, constraining the level of gas turbulence already with a 100-ks observation with Astro-H .

    Description: We employ robust weak gravitational lensing measurements to improve cosmological constraints from measurements of the galaxy cluster mass function and its evolution, using X-ray selected clusters detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. Our lensing analysis constrains the absolute mass scale of such clusters at the 8 per cent level, including both statistical and systematic uncertainties. Combining it with the survey data and X-ray follow-up observations, we find a tight constraint on a combination of the mean matter density and late-time normalization of the matter power spectrum, 8 ( m /0.3) 0.17  = 0.81 ± 0.03, with marginalized, one-dimensional constraints of m  = 0.26 ± 0.03 and 8  = 0.83 ± 0.04. For these two parameters, this represents a factor of 2 improvement in precision with respect to previous work, primarily due to the reduced systematic uncertainty in the absolute mass calibration provided by the lensing analysis. Our new results are in good agreement with constraints from cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, both Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ( WMAP ) and Planck (plus WMAP polarization), under the assumption of a flat CDM cosmology with minimal neutrino mass. Consequently, we find no evidence for non-minimal neutrino mass from the combination of cluster data with CMB, supernova and baryon acoustic oscillation measurements, regardless of which all-sky CMB data set is used (and independent of the recent claimed detection of B modes on degree scales). We also present improved constraints on models of dark energy (both constant and evolving), modifications of gravity, and primordial non-Gaussianity. Assuming flatness, the constraints for a constant dark energy equation of state from the cluster data alone are at the 15 per cent level, improving to ~6 per cent when the cluster data are combined with other leading probes.

    Description: We present an analysis of the X-ray bright point-source population in 43 massive clusters of galaxies observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory . We have constructed a catalogue of 4210 rigorously selected X-ray point sources in these fields, which span a survey area of 4.2 ° 2 . This catalogue reveals a clear excess of sources when compared to deep blank-field surveys, which amounts to roughly 1 ± 0.4 additional sources per cluster, likely active galactic nuclei (AGN) associated with the clusters. The excess sources are located within the overdensity radius r 500 , with the largest excess observed near the cluster centres. The average radial profile of the excess X-ray sources of the cluster is well described by a power law [ N ( r ) ~ r β ] with an index of β ~ –0.6. An initial analysis using literature results on the mean profile of member galaxies in massive X-ray-selected clusters indicates that the fraction of galaxies hosting X-ray AGN rises with increasing clustercentric radius, being approximately three times higher near r 500 than in the central regions. This trend is qualitatively similar to that observed for star formation in cluster member galaxies.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS Monolayers of Embryonic Bovine Trachea (EBTr) cells were inoculated with Isospora canis Nemeséri spcrozoites. As penetration commenced, they were fixed, stained with OsO4-ruthenium red, dehydrated, embedded and sectioned in situ. Examination by electron microscopy revealed that host cell membranes remained intact during penetration. The sporozoites caused an invagination of the cell's plasmalemma until the parasites were entirely within the cell, after which the invagination was sealed by short pseudopodia enclosing the parasite within a membrane-lined vacuole inside the cells. Rhoptries and micronemes, which appeared as branched elements of the same network, became less tortuous near the conoid and often became empty or partially empty during penetration. Concurrent with the appearance of these partially empty rhoptries, vesiculations were seen in the host cell cytoplasm opposite the apical tip of the sporczoite. Constrictions of the sporozoite during entry were probably due to bands of microfilaments beneath the plasmalemma and elsewhere in the cytoplasm of the host cell.

    Notes: The ultrastructure of neuromuscular junctions in the twitch fibers of the stapedius muscle of Gallus gallus (domesticus) was investigated as part of a series of neurophysiological studies. Among the morphological features observed were elongated end-plates with numerous large and clear synaptic vesicles mixed with larger dense core vesicles and irregular or aperiodic “active sites” in the presynaptic membrane where synaptic vesicles were focused. The most remarkable features of these junctions were large synaptic clefts (50-80 nm) and the absence of junctional folds in the sarcolemmal surface. Unlike the large periodic junctional folds seen in the neuromuscular junctions of frogs and in the fast twitch fibers of the mammalian stapedius, the preparations studied only show small aperiodic invaginations (primitive folds) in the postsynaptic membranes. This morphological feature remains essentially constant from newly hatched to adult chickens. While these smooth junctions are consistent with earlier findings of inconspicuous junctional folds in the twitch fibers of the chicken posterior latissimus dorsi they are unlike those seen in the fast twitch fibers of the mammalian stapedius muscle, or other twitch fibers in general. The morphological findings of the present study may also suggest that the simple, unmodified neuromuscular junctions in the stapedius of Gallus may be a useful preparation for studies of synaptic membrane structures that employ the freeze-fracture technique.
