Abstract: This book contains a comprehensive field guide, including detailed itineraries and supporting data, to the Geology of Western Ireland, a classic site for world geology. It facilitates study into the rock record of the Neoproterozoic ‘birth’ to the Devonian ‘death’ of the Iapetus Ocean along the Laurentian (North American) margin. The enormous variety of lithologies and processes available for study in this spectacularly exposed region include: fluviatile to deep-sea sediments; layered ultramafic intrusions to reverse zoned granite batholiths; zeolite to eclogite facies metamorphic assemblages; continental rifting; subduction processes; island arc evolution; arc-continent collision; Andean margin development; and continent-continent collision. An introduction to the geology, that includes information relevant to the planning and execution of field trips in the region, is followed by nine chapters each providing the necessary background, field itineraries, exercises and points for debate, covering: the Laurentian basement and Neoproterozoic cover of North Mayo, Sligo, the Ox Mountains and Connemara; the metamorphic nappes and syn-orogenic intrusions of the Ordovician Grampian Orogeny; the Cambro-Ordovician subduction-accretion complex of Clew Bay; the obducted Ordovician fore-arc basin of South Mayo; the post-subduction flip late-Ordovician of South Connemara; the Silurian successor basins deformed during the final closure of the Iapetus Ocean; the late to post-orogenic Devonian sediments; the Devonian Granite batholiths ; and the post-orogenic Carboniferous cratonic sediments. Two final chapters summarise: the current tectonic interpretation of this region; areas for future research; and the extensive sources of geochemical and geophysical data.

Description / Table of Contents: The evolution of oceanic plates is very well described by plate tectonic theory, but the study of continental tectonics is more complicated. Continental plates have a different rheology, a greater mean age, a higher heat productivity, and are more heterogeneous in composition. An understanding of continental tectonics requires, therefore, that these effects upon rigid plate behaviour be taken into account. This book brings together a series of papers which explore various aspects of the deformation of continental lithosphere, covering different tectonic settings from the Palaeozoic to the present day. These include the processes of terrane accretion and juxtaposition, the exhumation of high-pressure terrains, and mechanisms of crustal extension and rifting. The book will be of general interest to a broad audience of earth scientists concerned with global tectonics, continental growth processes, and the deformation of the continents during collision, exhumation and extension.

Notes: This paper explores whether firm-specific information events drive economically relevant positive and negative stock price changes and trading volume and, if so, the nature of such information. We find that no less than 65% of significant price changes and trading volume movements in our sample of FTSE 350 companies can be readily explained by public domain information contradicting the thesis that corporate news is not a primary driver, and that share price changes and trading volume activity are driven by factors unrelated to information flows per se. In addition, we find that a parsimonious set of news categories represent the key drivers. Sell-side analyst stock recommendations and earnings forecast revisions as a class, unaccompanied by other news releases, dominate all other news categories in terms of significant market reaction. However, taking into account the relative magnitude of market response to different news releases, firms’ formal accounting disclosures dominate within this domain. As such, we conclude these are not fully anticipated by apparently more timely market disclosures, and that the existence of news services and the activities of the sell-side analyst are not substitutes for a firm's interim and preliminary results.

Description: Structural, geophysical and metamorphic studies show that collisional orogeny thickens the crust by a factor of two or more. A large volume of continental material at the base of the orogen is, therefore, subject to eclogite facies conditions. Phase equilibration results in a loss of buoyancy and thermodynamic heating of this crustal root. This dense crustal material may be partially subducted, as in the Alps or the Himalayas, and lost to the system. Alternatively, it may rest isostatically below the Moho until it is partially exhumed during orogenic collapse, as in the Scandinavian Caledonides or the Tonbai-Dabie Mountains. Remnant orogenic roots may exist as seismically reflective mantle and provide a locus for subsequent Wilson Cycle rifting. The rate at which these phase transformations take place may have a profound buffering effect on the amount and duration of orogenic contraction. Isostatically compensated transient 2-dimensional finite element thermal models are presented, which seek to place some limits on these processes. It is interesting to speculate whether more is learnt about the process of orogeny from a single exhumed eclogitic boudin or from mapping nappe complexes.
