    Notes: Dodecanidiol dimethacrylate (DDMA) was polymerized by a cyclization mechanism in low monomer concentration (0.075-0.5 mol/L) and high AIBN concentration (0.44-1.76 × 10-2). The linear soluble polymer was formed even if the conversion of DDMA was as high as 25.6%. The glass transition temperature of cyclized polyDDMA (PDDMA) is about 4.5°C, which is 65°C higher than its homolog - poly(dodecyl methacrylate). The structure of the polymer was established by infrared and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The head-to-tail contents in cyclized PDDMA, i.e., the formation of a 20-membered ring, is predominant compared with those of head-to-head contents of a 19-membered ring. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Plasma spraying is a technique currently used in the production of HA-coated titanium implants. These coatings have been shown to be porous; they dissolve and have a weak bond to the substrate. The long-term interface strength has been questioned in particular. The aim of the present work was to produce HA coatings without the shortcomings of those produced by plasma spraying. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at 850°C and 1000 bar with no holding time was applied for this purpose. Initially, the HA powder was mixed with water and air sprayed on the Ti substrate. The Ti specimens were then cold-pressed, enclosed by a protective Pt foil, and encapsulated in an evacuated glass ampulla. Subsequent to HIP, the glass and the Pt foil were removed. These coatings were denser than those produced by plasma spraying. The bonding was measured to be 〉 62 MPa, which is considered to be satisfactory. The structure of the coating was checked by X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy, and was found to correspond to that of HA. Some cracks were observed in the coating running predominantly vertical to the surface. Whether these are acceptable has to be verified by in vivo experiments. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The flexural properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced with carbon/graphite (C/G) fibers with three different surface treatments were investigated by transverse bend testing after dry and wet storage. The fibers used were (1) commercially available fibers, (2) cleaned fibers, and (3) cleaned and sized fibers. The coating agents of commercial unidirectional and braided C/G fibers as well as impurities on C/G fibers for medical uses were characterized by means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The agar overlay technique was used to assess the cytotoxicity of leachable elements from different fibers and processed composites. Composites with both unidirectional and braided tubular C/G fibers were investigated after storage in water. Fracture stress and flexural modulus decreased when “commercial” fibers were used as reinforcing material. Composites with cleaned and sized fibers gave only minor differences in flexural properties after dry and wet storage. By means of SEM micrographs the adhesion behavior of unsized C/G fibers, epoxy sized fibers were assessed. After water storage a substantial part of the cleaned fibers adhered to the matrix material. The adhesion capacity of the other fibers was reduced since the water absorption caused separation of fiber and matrix.
