Notes: Summary 1. It is proposed that the method of preparing ultra-thin sections be applied to the electron-microscopic investigation of the structure of catalysts and adsorbents, and examples of the results obtained are given. 2. For the first time in the USSR, a microtome has been designed and constructed which will give sections of thickness not exceeding 0.01μ.

Notes: Summary 1. It was shown that, both when heated in a vacuum and also when heated in a gas at atmospheric pressure, a catalyst of original composition WS2.30 loses nonstoichiometric sulfur to an extent that depends on the conditions of heating. 2. It was shown that the specific surface of a WS2 catalyst varies over a wide range, depending on the conditions of thermal treatment. In the experiments described a 22-fold variation (from 3 to 66 sq.m/g) was found. 3. It was found that there is a parallelism between reduction in the content of nonstoichiometric sulfur during thermal treatment and the increase in specific surface and pore volume, i.e. that the formation of the porous structure of the WS2 catalyst is associated with removal of nonstoichiometric sulfur. Reduction in specific surface as a result of re crystallization becomes considerable at temperatures above 600°. 4. The distribution of pores was studied by analysis of low-temperature isotherms for the adsorption of nitrogen. The results were examined in their relation to the change in the chemical composition of WS2 catalysts during thermal treatment. 5. For some of the samples investigated, a comparison was made between structural data and catalytic activity: a parallelism was observed between changes in the degree of conversion of benzene (400°, 140 atm initial pressure) and in the specific surface.

Notes: Summary 1. Study of the specific activities of Al2O3- NiO catalysts roasted at 400–750° for the decomposition of i-C3H7OH showed that there is optimum activity with respect to composition for NiO contents ranging from 5–15 moles per cent. 2. It was shown that the selectivities of the catalysts studied depend on composition; over a wide range of NiO contents only dehydration occurs, which indicates absence of free NiO. Dehydrogenating power appears only in catalysts of high NiO content and indicates the formation of a free-NiO phase. 3. It was shown that in coprecipitated NiO-A12O3 catalysts it is possible for the spinel NiAl2O4 to be formed at a temperature as low as 400° because of the intermolecular dehydration of the hydroxides. 4. The relation between specific surface and temperature of roasting was determined for these catalysts over the range 400–900°.

Notes: Summary 1. Together withγ- anda-Al2O3, other polymorphic modifications of Al2O3 described in the literature (χ, κ, Θ, and δ phases) were also prepared and it was shown that their existence is not caused by differences in the residual water content of the aluminum oxide and their total and specific activities in the catalytic dehydration of iso- C3H7OH were determined for the first time. 2. The total catalytic activity of the phases changed symbatically with a change in the specific surface. According to the specific activity, found for preparations with the same residual water content per m2 of surface, the phases form the series Θ〉χ〉κ〉 γ(〈δ)≫〉 a. It was shown that Aspec of some phases obtained at high temperatures was higher than that of those obtained at low temperatures. 3. It was confirmed that there are three series of phase conversions, depending on the nature of the original aluminum hydroxides. 4. It was established by x-ray methods that the phases retained their structural characteristics during catalytic experiments.

Notes: Summary 1. The thermal conversion of boehmite toγ-alumina was studied by an adsorption method. Detailed structural characteristics of five samples with different H2O contents were determined. 2. The absolute isotherms for the adsorption of argon and nitrogen at −195° and n-C6H14 and C6H6 at 20° were calculated. It was established that boehmite adsorbs less thanγ-Al2O3. 3. A change in the concentration of hydroxyl groups in alumina was found to affect the adsorption of benzene, but not the adsorption of n-hexane.

Notes: Summary 1. An investigation was made of the effect of composition and thermal treatment conditions of A12O3-Fe2O3 catalysts on the specific activity in the dehydration (Asp) and dehydrogenation(A′sp) of i-C3H7OH at 260–290°. 2. Dehydration of alcohol occurs on the A12O3 phase with Fe2O3 dissolved in it. The addition of Fe2O3 strongly reduces Asp of Al2O3, though it also passes through a maximum at 32–40 mol. % of Fe2O3. With a rise in catalyst firing temperature from 400 to 750°, Asp increases. 3. Dehydrogenation, which is caused by the solid solution of A12O3 in Fe2O3, becomes appreciable with an Fe2O3 content of 18 mol. %; A′sp increases rapidly and nonlinearly with an increase in Fe2O3 concentration and a rise in catalyst firing temperature. 4. A′sp for catalysts fired at 400° (all paramagnetic) changes with composition symbatically with the value of the magnetic susceptibility. No relation was observed between the ferromagnetism of catalysts and A′sp. 5. Although some Al2O3-Fe2O3 catalysts have a considerably greater specific surface, their over-all dehydrating activity is lower than that of Al2O3 obtained under analogous conditions.

Notes: Summary 1. An investigation was made of the effect of component ratio and thermal treatment conditions on the phase composition and magnetic properties of coprecipitated ferric oxide-alumina gels containing up to 57 mol. percent of 2. Gels fired at 400° contained only one crystalline phase, namely, a saturated solid solution of Fe2O3 (8 mol. %@#@) inγ-Al2O3, while those fired at 600 and 750° also contained a solid solution of Al2O3 inα-Fe2O3. Noγ-Fe2O3 was detected either by x-ray diffraction or magnetic methods. 3. Fe2O3 reduced the temperature of the phase transition ofγ-Al2O3, in which it was dissolved, toα-Al2O3 and this transition occurred even at 1000°. 4. All gels fired at 400°, gels with 7 and 18 mol. % of Fe2O3 fired at 600°, and the gel with 8% of Fe2O3 fired at 750° were paramagnetic and obeyed the Curie-Weiss law with a positive value for the Weiss constant. Their paramagnetism is explained by the formation ofβ-Fe2O3 or more complex transition phases. All the other gels were ferromagnetic. 5. Catalytic reactions of isopropyl alcohol on the gels studied at 260–290° led to an increase in the ferromagnetism as a result of the formation of Fe3O4.

Notes: Summary 1. A comparison was made for the first time of the activity of a series of unmixed WS2 catalysts, determined from the high-pressure hydrogenation of phenol in the kinetic region at 380° and an initial H2 pressure of 110 atm, and their chemical composition, crystal structure of the WS2 phase, specific surface, and acidity. 2. The activity of the WS2 catalyst in hydrogenation increased with an increase in the sulfur content within the limits of S: W of 1.53 to 2.30 or an increase in acidity. 3. The activity was increased only by sulfur atoms on the surface, while sulfur in the pores did not affect the activity. 4. The specific activity of a WS2 catalyst with S: W ≈ 2 and an insignificant acidity was independent of the degree of order of the crystalline structure of the WS2 phase. 5. The composition of the surface affected the selectivity of a WS2 catalyst; its hydrogenating capacity increased with an increase in the sulfur content.
