Abstract Reactions of melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) with radiolytically generated radicals were studied. Reaction of melatonin with OH radicals is diffusion-controlled (k=1.2·1010 dm3 mol−1·s−1), the main (but not the only one) intermediate being the indolyl-type radical, while the rate constant for the reaction with hydrated electrons isk=4.3·108 dm3·mol−1·s−1. Melatonin is capable of scavenging tert-butanol radicals, while its reactivity towards polymer radicals of poly(acrylic acid) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) is very low.
