    Description: The Contourite Depositional Systems (CDS) in the Gulf of Cádiz and on the West Iberian margin preserve a unique archive of Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) variability over the past 5.3 Ma. These CDS have been recently drilled in several places during the IODP Expedition 339. These drill sites now offer a new window to the internal Pliocene and Quaternary architecture of the CDS. In this study, we use downhole and core Gamma Ray (GR) data acquired from 5 sites drilled in the CDS along the middle slope and 1 site drilled in the deeper setting of the lower slope, out of the MOW path. The GR data primarily tracks the clay content in the sediment and is the expression of sediment supply and, for sites drilled in the CDS, of the bottom current processes. Both appear astronomically controlled as shown by spectral analysis performed on the GR data. Results also reveal that the GR log patterns correlate well across the sites over the last 1.4 My. Several GR horizons corresponding to drops in GR values were identified, most of which fit with coarse-grained deposits observed in cores and interpreted as contourite beds. The GR horizons are interpreted as isochronous horizons, providing a regional scale chronostratigraphic framework for the CDS depositional records with an accuracy of ~ 20 ky. We further assess the spatial and temporal variability of the CDS hiatuses at the regional scale.

    Notes: Abstract –  The fish assemblage of the floodplain of the Mamoré River (Bolivia) was estimated in eight lakes, corresponding to four habitat types, situated on an environmental gradient related to the river distance: lakes situated near the river, in the forested floodplain, at the floodplain edge and lakes isolated in the savanna. This paper documents the diet of 71 fish species (among the 140 recorded) and compares the taxonomic and trophic structure of fish assemblages between four lake types. The diet analysis was conducted to determine five trophic guilds: algivores/iliophages, herbivores, zooplanktivores, invertivores and piscivores. The taxonomic and trophic structures of the fish assemblages were not similar in the different lake types of the Mamoré River. The trophic structure of assemblages showed a coarse pattern of dominance of algivores/iliophages and invertivores, but different situations were observed in relative abundance of the trophic groups in relation to the spatial position of the lakes (except for piscivores). Lakes close to the river appeared more favourable to the microphages (algivores/iliophages, zooplanktivores) although remote lakes appeared more favourable to the macrophages (invertivores, herbivores). These results support the general idea that fish distribution follows a pattern linked to the ecology of the species, and related to environmental characteristics of the lakes.

    Notes: Morphological correlates of diet were examined in 48 species of freshwater fishes from floodplain lakes in the central part of the Mamoré River (Bolivian Amazon). The species were classified, according to the percentage occurrence of seven food items, into eight broad trophic categories: mud feeders, algivores, herbivores, terrestrial invertivores and omnivores, carnivores, zooplanktivores, aquatic invertivores and piscivores. There were significant relationships between the diet and morphology of the fishes even when the effect of taxonomical relatedness between species was eliminated. Relative gut length was the main morphological variable used to order species on a carnivore to mud feeder gradient. Standard length and head and mouth size were the morphological variables most closely associated with prey size. Mud feeder, algivore and piscivore species appeared as the most dietary and morphologically specialized. These results support both the hypotheses that species morphology influences the diet and that morphological similarity is conserved even in comparison with taxonomically unrelated species.

    Notes: Polypropylene/polyamide-6 and polypropylene/metallocene polyethylene blends containing 2.5 phrof organophilic modified montmorillonite were prepared in a twin-screw extruder followed byinjection molding. In order to compare, blends without layered clay were also made. Styreneethylene-butylene-styrene copolymer and polypropylene grafted with anhydride maleic were usedas compatibilizers in the ternary blends and in the PP nanocomposite preparation, respectively. Thepresence of tactoids, intercalated and exfoliated structures was observed by TEM in some of thesamples containing layered clay and modified PP materials. Results showed that the compatibilizedblends prepared without clay are tougher than those prepared with the nanocomposite of PP as thematrix phase and no significant changes in tensile moduli were observed between them. However,the binary blend with a nanocomposite of PP as matrix and metallocene polyethylene exhibitedbetter tensile toughness and lower tensile modulus, than those prepared with a nanocomposite of PPand polyamide-6 as dispersed phase. These results are related to the degree of clay dispersion in thePP and to the type of morphology developed in the different blends. Differential scanningcalorimetry (DSC) showed that blends with a finer and homogeneously dispersed morphologydetermined by SEM, the PA component exhibited fractionated crystallization exotherms in thetemperature range of 159-185°C. Also, nucleation of the PP component by PA phase and/or thelayered clay was observed in the blends with PA as dispersed phase

    Notes: The technical design solution for the future thermonuclear fusion reactor, ITER, must guarantee a reasonable lifetime from a safety and economical point of view. Carbon fibre reinforced carbon (CFC) is envisaged as a corrective material solution for the strike point area of ITER divertor due to its high thermal shock resistance necessary to withstand excessive heat loads during transient thermal loads; in particular plasma disruptions that can deposit energy densities of several ten MJm-2 with a typical timescale in the order of milliseconds. In this work, as potential alternative to CFCs new finely dispersed TiC-doped isotropic graphites with high thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, manufactured using synthetic mesophase pitch “AR” as raw material, have been evaluated under typical disruption conditions using an energetic electron beam at the JUDITH facility
