Notes: Ion interpenetration, stagnation, and energization processes are studied in colliding laser-produced plasma configurations relevant to Trident [R. G. Watt, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 64, 1770 (1993)] experiments using four different numerical methods: one-dimensional Monte Carlo and Lagrangian multifluid codes, and one- and two-dimensional hybrid (particle ions, fluid electrons) and single-fluid Lagrangian codes. Results from the four methodologies are compared for plasmas generated with gold and deuterated polyethylene (CD2) targets. Overall, the various codes give similar results concerning the initial expansion of the plasmas and their collisional interaction, the degree of stagnation, stagnation time, and amount of ion thermalization for gold targets, while multispecies techniques indicate a much softer stagnation for CD2 plasmas than the single-fluid model. Variations in the results of the calculations due to somewhat different initializations and parameters, as well as to different physics in the codes, are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Numerical experiments were made in computing near-equatorial atmospheric circulation for a given field of sea surface pressure to make clear how much the baric field typical of the Indian-Pacific sector of the near-equatorial zone can be responsible for the formation of two ITCZ observed here on either side of the equator. It has been obtained that east of the equatorial pressure low centre the computed wind field is characterized by two zones of uprising air currents lying on either side of the equator, this being in agreement with the real data on ITCZ position, whilst west of the pressure low centre by only one zone of intensive upward air currents lying along the equator, this being in disagreement with the said data. It is suggested that a more detailed pattern of pressure distribution will be, apparently, able to account for the formation of two ITCZ also at the western periphery of equatorial pressure low; this question, however, need to be further studied.

Notes: Abstract Electron transport and heating in a two-dimensional semiconductor superlattice with arbitrary orientation of the field (current) relative to the crystallographic axes is investigated in the approximation of constant energy and velocity relaxation times with electron-electron collisions taken into account. The nonlinear conductivity, average electron energies, and interrelationship between field direction and the current excited by it in an unbounded superlattice, as well as the current-voltage characteristics and the transverse electromotive force of a superlattice of finite width are found.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of the Boltzmann equation with a new model collision integral that takes into account the redistribution of energy and momentum of all degrees of freedom of the electron, we have constructed and investigated a three-dimensional model of electron transport in one-dimensional semiconductor superlattices (SL’s). The current-voltage curves (CVC), mean energies, and effective temperatures of the electrons have been found for vertical and longitudinal transport. In contrast to one-dimensional models, the approach developed here allows one to take into account and describe not only longitudinal electron heating, but also electron heating transverse to the current. For vertical transport, transverse heating substantially alters the position, magnitude, and width of the current maximum. For longitudinal transport, electron heating that is non-quadratic in the field arises along the superlattice axis even in the approximation of a linear current-voltage characteristic. The possibility of describing electron transport in a superlattice using a mixed Fermi distribution with an isotropic temperature is analyzed.

Notes: Abstract The optical and electrophysical properties of the GaAs/In0.25Ga0.75As heterostructure with a symmetric double quantum well have been investigated. The influence of tunneling electrons and holes through an internal barrier of the quantum well on the shift and splitting of the quantum levels is analyzed. The theoretical estimates are compared with the results of the photoluminescence and photoconductivity measurements. The Hall measurements indicate that the barrier strongly affects the mobility of charge carriers.

Notes: Abstract An investigation is made of nonlinear oscillations of the field and current in semiconductor superlattices driven by strong terahertz radiation. Regimes of periodic, quasi-periodic, and stochastic self-oscillations are determined and mechanisms for their formation are discussed. It is shown that the self-oscillation spectra are many-valued functions of the external field amplitude and the static field in them is either absent, weak, or fractionally quantized. Previously predicted states of self-induced superlattice transparency and dynamic electron localization are destroyed as a result of the evolution of dissipative and parametric instabilities and can only be observed in transient processes whose duration decreases with increasing electron concentration.

Notes: Abstract The porous structure of active carbon was compared with that of the original mineral coal and its carbonization products. The parameters of the porous structure were calculated from the adsorption isotherms of CO2 (298 K) and H2O (293 K). It was shown that carbonization of the original coal at 1120 K causes changes in the chemical composition, consolidation of the part which is amorphous to X-rays, generation of an ordered defect-containing structure on its basis, an increase in the volume of the micropores, and a decrease in the mean diameter. Activation of the carbonized coal affords a microporous structure with a bimodal size distribution.
