Notes: Nonlinear ordinary differential equations admitting a superposition principle based on the action of the group SL(n,C) on the homogeneous spaces SL(n,C)/O(n,C) and SL(n,C)/Sp(n,C) are derived. The superposition formulas are presented explicitly. In the O(n,C) case the general solution is expressed in terms of three particular solutions (for any n). For the Sp(n,C) case three solutions are needed for n=2k≥8, four solutions for n=6, and five solutions for n=4.

Notes: A system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations allowing a superposition formula can be associated with every Lie group–subgroup pair G&supuline;G0. We consider the case when G=SL(n+k,C) and G0=P(k) is a maximal parabolic subgroup of G, leaving a k-dimensional vector space invariant (1≤k≤n). The nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE's) in this case are rectangular matrix Riccati equations for a matrix W(t)∈Cn×k. The special case n=rk (n,r,k∈N) is considered and a superposition formula is obtained, expressing the general solution in terms of r+3 particular solutions for r≥2, k≥2. For r=1 (square matrix Riccati equations) five solutions are needed, for r=n (projective Riccati equations) the required number is n+2.

Notes: The general theory of the separation of variables in Hamilton–Jacobi and Laplace–Beltrami equations on the SU(p,q) hyperboloid is used to introduce completely integrable Hamiltonian systems on O(p,q) hyperboloids. Each of the q+1 different Cartan subalgebras of su(p,q) leads to a different integrable O(p,q) potential. Different complete sets of integrals of motion are obtained for each of the integrable systems.

Notes: A need exists for low-cost coated-conductor fabrication methods for applications in magnet and electric-power technologies. We demonstrate high-critical current density (Jc) YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films grown on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (Nb:STO) buffered Ni(100) tapes. All buffer and superconductor layers are deposited using solution chemistry. A 50 nm thick Nb:STO seed layer on Ni(100) acts as a template for the growth of subsequent thicker layers of Nb:STO. Nb doping improves the electrical conductivity and oxygen diffusion barrier properties of STO. YBCO grows heteroepitaxially directly on this buffer layer, resulting in a transport Jc(77 K)=1.3 MA/cm2. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of crystallization temperature on the electrical properties of sol-gel derived Pb(Zr,Ti,Nb)O3 or PNZT capacitors with La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) electrodes has been investigated. It is demonstrated that LSCO//PNZT(4/30/70)//LSCO capacitors can be fabricated at temperatures as low as 550 °C without significant degradation in their ferroelectric and dielectric properties. Lowering the process temperature to 500 °C resulted in substantial degradation in capacitor properties. Nonetheless, all capacitors processed in the 500 °C to 675 °C range exhibited essentially no fatigue up to 5×109 switching cycles. The low temperature processing is significant as it indicates that this ferroelectric capacitor technology is compatible with high density nonvolatile memory architectures. In other words, these process temperatures are low enough to maintain plug integrity and to prevent degradation of the underlying CMOS circuitry in a high density ferroelectric memory. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ce activated SrGa2S4 blue emitting phosphors were examined using electron paramagnetic resonance and x-ray diffraction to determine the local environment and oxidation state of the Ce ion. Photothermal deflection and photoluminescence spectroscopies were applied to determine absorption and emission characteristics. It is found that the majority of the Ce3+ ions substitute for the eightfold coordinated antiprismatic Sr2+ cations in the structure. Our results show that the Ce ions exhibit C3h symmetry; this suggests that they are ninefold coordinated. This coordination may arise from a nearby S interstitial, energetically favorable because of charge compensation. To achieve this symmetry, only minor rearrangements of the eight S atoms in the antiprismatic configuration are required. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Precise homing of 24 brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis (157–215 mm LF), displaced from their site of capture in a natural stream, was rare both in fish displaced upstream and those displaced downstream. Most fish settled in preferred habitats (pool or glide) away from their home site and showed restricted movement up to the pre-spawning period. Partial return responses, however, were stronger in fish displaced downstream than in fish displaced upstream. Most fish displaced downstream showed directional upstream movement soon after displacement, whereas fish displaced upstream did not show directional upstream movement, suggesting that it is primarily olfactory cues from upstream locations, and not positive rheotaxis, which mediate the return response. Homing success was unrelated to distance of displacement, body size, or population density in the home site, but daily mobility increased with body size for fish displaced downstream. There was no evidence of switching between specific areas between night and day, nor of differences between daytime and night-time mobility, suggesting that diel movement cycles did not bias the evaluation of homing success. Site attachment in stream-dwelling brook charr may be characterized as persistent (undisturbed fish remain stationary over long periods), but readily disrupted by involuntary displacement.

Notes: The fluorescence excitation spectra of free 2,5-bis(2'-benzoxazolyl)-hydroquinone (BBXHQ) cooled in a supersonic jet are examined. By using double-resonance saturation spectroscopy, we show that adjacent vibronic transitions, leading to either blue or red fluorescence, belong to a single molecular species in the electronic ground state. The molecular geometries of the enol and keto forms which are relevant for intramolecular transfer of a single hydrogen atom in the S1 state are obtained by the MNDO/H method. The translocation distance is calculated to be 0.43 A(ring). The complexity of the vibronic spectrum, near the electronic origin for the S0(1Ag) → S1(1Bu) transition of the enol form at 4178.1 A(ring), is attributed to vibronic coupling with the nonplanar excited keto form due to H tunneling.

Notes: The specific objectives of this study were to determine if there is individual specialization in habitat use by lacustrine brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis and if so, if specialization is related to fish morphology. Localizations of 28 brook charr equipped with thermosensitive radiotransmitters were recorded during three summers (1991, 1992, and 1993) in two lakes of the Mastigouche Reserve (Québec, Canada). Fifty per cent of the fish were found mainly in the benthic zone (hereafter benthic individuals), 18% in the pelagic zone (pelagic individuals), and 32% travelled regularly between the two zones (generalist individuals). The observed interindividual differences in habitat preference were related to differences in body morphology and coloration: (i) the pectoral fins of benthic and generalist individuals were significantly longer than those of pelagic ones; and (ii) the coloration of the lower flank of benthic and generalist individuals was silver-grey while that of pelagic individuals was red. The results of this study suggest that brook charr inhabiting oligotrophic lakes of the Canadian Shield exhibit trophic polymorphisms, where some individuals are specialists better adapted to feeding in the littoral zone whereas others are specialists better adapted to feeding in the pelagic zone. The potential for reproductive isolation between the two morphs is discussed.
