Description / Table of Contents: Complexes with Aromatic Carboxylic Acids. I. Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Zinc Pyromellitate HeptahydrateThe crystal structure of zinc pyromellitate heptahydrate comprises features of ion exchangers, layer-like, and zeolitic structures. Single crystals of this compound were obtained by crystallization in aqueous silicagel. According to the structural properties Zn(H2O)5[ZnC6H2(COO)4]·2H2O is an appropriate formula. Zn(1) is coordinated tetrahedrally by four oxygen atoms of the carboxylate groups. Thus forming folded [ZnC6H2(COO)4]n2n- layers to which Zn(2) is bound by only one carboxylate oxygen atom. The coordination sphere of Zn(2) is completed by five water molecules to yield a slightly distorted octahedron. Additional water is accomodated between the layers. The [ZnC6H2(COO)4]n2n- layers possess channel-like cavities extending along [100] which are filled by water molecules. Hydrogen bonding is an important feature of this crystal structure.

Description / Table of Contents: Complexes with Substituted 2,5-Dihydroxy-p-benzochinones: EAC6(C6H5)2O4 · 4 H2O (EA = Sr2+, Ba2+)Single crystals of the isotypic compounds EAC6(C6H5)2O4 · 4 H2O were grown in aqueous silicagel. EA2+ has CN 8. It is surrounded by four water molecules and four oxygen atoms of the bis-chelating polyporate dianions. Thereby folded chains are formed which are interlinked by hydrogen bonds. Thus building up corrugated layers with the phenyl substituents almost perpendicular to the layer plane. The layer stacking provides that they can engage into another.

Description / Table of Contents: Preparation and Structure of Ag2C4O4Ag2C4O4 occurs in a yellow and a colourless modification. Both forms decompose to metallic silver upon heating. Ag+ is coordinated in two different fashions in the yellow Ag2C4O4. Ag(1) shows distorted tetrahedral coordination, Ag(2) is coordinated in an unusual distorted square planar manner. The connection of Ag+ and C4O42- leads to a complicated three-dimensional framework. C4O42- is planar with C—O and C—C bonds lengths typical of complete delocalization of the π-electron system.
