Notes: A cryogenic support has been developed that rigidly attaches two U-shaped aluminum beams to each other with strands of Kevlar. The Kevlar creates a very strong and stiff coupling between the beams while allowing only a very small heat to flow between them. Measurements at room temperature and at 77 K confirm the stiffness and strength of the support

Notes: Abstract We have measured the temperature dependence of the sound velocity in liquid 4 He at pressures from the vapor pressure to near the solidification pressure. The data were obtained at frequencies from 12 to 105 MHz and covered the temperature range from below 0.1 to nearly 1.0 K. The velocity data at high pressures do not show any anomaly that can be associated with a distinct shoulder found earlier in the sound attenuation. As observed previously at the vapor pressure, the frequency dependence of the velocity data undergoes an inversion at low temperatures; this unexpected behavior is in agreement with recent theoretical treatments.

Notes: Abstract In an effort to better understand the various factors involved in refrigeration by adiabatic demagnetization, we have set up a computer model of a paramagnetic salt in contact with liquid3He. This model has been used to study the cooling of the3He from an initial temperature of 20 mK, which is typical of the temperature achieved in a dilution refrigerator. The effects of various demagnetization schedules, heat leaks, and varying ratios of salt to liquid have been studied. The model was used to simulate an actual demagnetization and gave excellent agreement with measured temperatures. We also show how the model can be extended to the case of nuclear demagnetization.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of the complex acoustic shear impedance of3He-B at 19 bar and 36 and 60 MHz, and of3He-A at 23 bar and 12, 36, and 60 MHz, have been made by observing the time constant and the frequency shift of the decay of a transiently excited AC-cut quartz transducer.

Notes: Abstract A potential barrier is observed for the transmission of electron bubbles through the3He-4He boundary of a phase-separated mixture from the4He-rich side. The origin of the barrier is electrostatic (dielectric image charge) but the measured magnitude is considerably less than a simple estimate predicts. The reason for this discrepancy is explained in terms of a finite boundary width.

Notes: The mobility of positive ions in essentially pure 3He and in solutions with 100, 300, 1000, 3000, and 10,000 ppm of 4He has been studied at pressures of 60 Torr, 10, 20, and 25.6 bar. For temperatures below about 100 mK the pureliquid mobility data are consistent with a ln (T 0/T) behavior except at the very lowest temperatures, where field-dependent effects may cause departures; both phenomena are in agreement with recent calculations of Bowley based on the Josephson-Lekner formalism. In the more concentrated solutions an increase in the ion radius (corresponding to a decrease in the mobility) is observed starting below ~200mK; this is interpreted as a polarization-potentialinduced phase separation resulting in a liquid 4He-rich “halo” about the solid ion core. At still lower temperatures a vanishing 4He content causes the solution data to rather abruptly rejoin the pure-liquid data. At still higher 4He concentrations additional very low-mobility species are observed which are likely ions with large metastable halos produced by a large 4He concentration at the field-emission tip where the ions are created.

Notes: We Report on two sets of measurements on powdered PrNi5 in contact with liquid 3He: low-temperature magnetic susceptibility using SQUID magnetometer techniques, and also thermal relaxation and heat capacity measurements. In addition, a demagnetization experiment using the hyperfine enhanced nuclear cooling capability of PrNi5 to cool liquid 3He to 1.1 mK is described.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the temperature dependence of the sound velocity in liquid 4 He from 0.07 to 0.7 K for frequencies from 12 to 105 MHz. While the data show an approximateT 4 temperature dependence, the frequency ordering of the curves is observed to undergo an inversion at about 0.2 K. Above this temperature we confirm that the velocity shift decreases with frequency, while below this temperature we now find that the velocity shift increases with frequency as predicted by theory.

Notes: Abstract We have measured the pressure at constant volumeP v(T), of liquid3He as a function of temperature from 10 to 600 mK and at starting pressures from 1.6 to 28.1 bar. Simultaneously, we determined the hydrodynamic sound velocityc 1, at the same pressures and temperatures. From these data we have derived very accurate values of the isobaric expansion coefficient α p and the adiabatic compressibility κ.
