Abstract: The book focuses on the emerging anti-aging approaches for maintaining better health in old age. It provides a current understanding of the underlying principle, possible targets, implementation approaches, and efficacy of the various anti-aging strategies. The chapters include a wide range of topics incorporating the major advances in anti-aging strategies, including telomerase activation, stem cell therapy, autophagy induction, sirtuin activation, and dietary restrictions. Further, it discusses the epigenetic mechanisms underlying aging-related processes and epigenetic strategies to delay and reverse aging-related diseases. The book covers the strategy based on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for understanding the complexity of aging and restoring the functionalities of organ systems. It further presents the applications of melatonin supplementation-based anti-aging therapeutic intervention. Finally, the book reviews the ethical dimension of anti-aging intervention strategies. This book is immensely useful to scientists and researchers from various disciplines in the life sciences. .

Notes: The Jafurah sand sea of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia extends along the Arabian Gulf coastline from Kuwait in the north to the Rub Al Khali in the south, a distance of about 800 km. Sand drifts southward to south-eastward from regions of high wind energy in the north to low wind energy in the south. The aeolian landscape is zoned, with areas of deflation, transport and deposition from north to south. Drift rates in the zone of transport, near Abqaiq, range from 2 m3 m-w-1 yr-1 on sabkhas, to 29 m3 m-w-1 yr-1 on the crests of dunes. Average drift rates of approximately 18 m3 m-w-1 yr-1 observed during the study can cause about 1 m of accumulation per 5500 yr in a 100 km zone of deposition downwind, not including the bulk transport represented by the forward advance of dunes. Dune advance ranged from 23 m (2.9 m high dune) to 3 m (23 m high dune) during April-October 1980.The study area consists of dune, interdune, sand sheet and siliciclastic sabkha terrains, each of which is characterized by differing drift rates, and differing rates of erosion or deposition. Sedimentation occurs by lateral movement of dunes and interdunes, and vertical accretion by sand sheets and sabkhas.

Notes: A static method was used to measure the solubilities and distribution coefficients of δ-lactones (pure), inherent (natural levels) δ-lactones of anhydrous milk fat (AMF) and fortified (added) δ-lactones in AMF in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) at 40°C with pressures of 5–30 MPa. At 40°C distribution coefficients of δ-lactones increased with pressure and exhibited molecular weight-dependency. Using experimental data, a mathematical model based on thermodynamic equilibria and material balance was developed and used to predict the distribution of inherent δ-lactones of AMF in a continuous SC-CO2 extraction system. At 24.1 MPa/40°C column conditions, AMF was separated into a raffinate and 5 fractions. Predicted δ-lactones distribution coefficients in the raffinate and extract were in good agreement with experimental data.

Notes: The potential of employing ultrasonic waves to detect sealworms embedded deep in the fish musculature was demonstrated. Images were made of sealworm-infested cod by using both the scanning laser acoustic microscopic technique, as well as the pulse-echo technique at 10 MHz. Also, attenuation of ultrasound in the frequency range from 1.0 to 12.25 MHz was studied in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), ocean catfish (Anarhichas lupus), and the parasitic sealworm (Phocanema decipiens). The difference in the attenuation of ultrasound in sealworms and in fish tissue increased as a function of frequency. The differences between ultrasonic properties (attenuation and backscatter) of fish tissue and seal-worms was attributable to the high collagen content of the sealworms. The differences were sufficiently large at 10 MHz that sealworms could be detected in over 4 cm thickness of fish tissue.

Notes: Synopsis The study deals with the entrapment of fishes in the intake of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant. A total of 62 species of marine fishes belonging to 43 genera were observed entrapped in the seawater intake. Therapon puta, Liza waigiensis, Abudefduf septemfasciatus, and Lagoceptalus inermis were the most common. Mass mortalities of the juveniles of Sardinella sindensis were recorded in September and October of 1974, 1975, and 1977. Commercially important fishes such as sardines, mullets and anchovies, were entrapped in the intake of the power plant in considerable numbers at various times of the year. The majority of fishes removed from the screen washes of the power plants were killed by impingement.
